Wolfman WR2 Head Discussion

Yesterday was my first shave with the WR2-115DC. I ran the OC side against a WR1-80OC in bronze.

Prior shave was the WR2-125 DC. I ran the OC side against a WR1-86OC.

The 115 is slightly more efficient than the 80OC. Let's call it an 82 or 83.

The 125 is slightly more efficient than the 86. Let's call it an 89.

As much as I love the 125, I think I'll wind up settling in with the 115. I could run it daily.

The good news is the WR2 head maintains it's buttery smoothness through the gap.

Are there common days or time of day when these are restocked? How does the WR2 compare to a timeless SB?

Day #3 with the WR-2 DC (1.15 OC/1.05 SB)

The only other Wolfman I have with which to compare this razor is a WR-1 SB (.80). Like yesterday, I used the OC side for the first pass and the SB side for the second pass. Unlike yesterday, I went back to the OC side for a final touch up. I have a few observations:

I agree with LOOT's assessment above as far as the 1.15 side goes. It feels a bit more efficient than my WR-1 .80. The WR-2 is much smoother, however. I clearly feel the blade with the WR-2 OC, but slightly less than I do with the WR-1. I think they give me a comparable shave, but smoothness of the WR-2 is definitely appreciated.

The 1.05 SB has noticeably less blade feel than both the OC side and my WR-1. I was worried that I wouldn't notice the difference between two consecutive gaps, but the difference is obvious.

I was tempted to go one blade gap different in each direction (OC 1.25/SB 1.05 or OC 1.15/SB.95). So far, I think I made the right choice. Today's shave was even better than yesterday's. If my face can handle it, I am going to try to shave Sunday to Friday with the WR-2 and experiment with different combinations of OC/SB passes.

This is my third shave with this Razor, a WR2 1.15 SB. I received it several weeks ago but have been traveling the last few weeks so haven’t really been able to put it through it’s paces. I used a new Gillette Nacet for this shave, one of my go to blades because in my use they are sharp yet still smooth. For comparison, some of my favorite Razors that I’m able to get excellent results with are the Blackland Blackbird OC and SB, Timeless .95 OC, Charcoal Goods lvl 2 SB and OC, BBS-1, and WR1 OC and SB from .67 to .74 blade gaps. With all of the above Razors I’m able to get a three pass BBS Shave with no irritation.

I had originally purchased a .95 WR2 during the second drop, before James started offering different blades gaps. For me, the Shave was so mild that I couldn’t get a very long lasting shave, it just wasn’t efficient enough for my tastes. I ended up selling the .95 to a Friend for cost after snagging an increased blade gap WR2. I didn’t know what affect the different blade gap would have on the shave having never used an increased blade gap WR2, so I wasn’t sure how high I should go. My .74 WR1’s are very efficient for me, and leave me smooth as glass, but if I’m not careful they will bite me. The same goes for my Timeless .95 OC, if I start applying pressure instead of letting the Razor do the work, it will bite me.

After my third use with the WR2, I find the shaves to be comparable to the results I get with my Charcoal Goods lvl 2 Razors, as well as my .67 WR1’s. The results I’ve gotten just aren’t quite as efficient as my WR1 .74 blade gap Razors, my Blackbird Razors, or my Timeless .95 OC. I’m assuming this has to do with my technique or lack there of, because this seems to go against what most others I’ve spoken to are experiencing. I’m certainly no Masochist and don’t typically enjoy using super aggressive razors. I had to sell my Charcoal Goods lvl 3 because every time I used it I got Razor Burn, although I had very good results with a 2013 R41 that I used to own. Again, I’m sure this has everything to do with my technique or lack there of. For me personally I get excellent results with my lvl 2 Charcoal Goods Razors paired with a Feather blade, so I have no need for a lvl 3. I will say that the shaves I’m getting with the WR2 are extremely smooth. I also noticed that I’m able to apply quite a bit more pressure with this razor than I am with any of the other razors in my den without experiencing any irritation. The WR2 seems to be very audible as well which helps when trying to make sure I’m using the correct angle while shaving. I was BBS after shaving, and there was no burn at all when using my CL Aftershave Splash.

My plan is to use this Razor exclusively for the next few weeks to see if I can get the results that others are getting with good technique. My first two shaves I think I was riding the top cap as I would my Blackbird, but this last shave I rode the safety bar and adjusted my angle until I could feel/hear the blade cutting as I would with my WR1’s. I certainly can’t argue with the results I’m getting, my shaves have all been super smooth and close. I would just like to see if I can get a longer lasting BBS shave that many others seem to be experiencing with the increased blade gap WR2’s. If after a few weeks of use I can’t get shaves that are any more efficient I will try to get my hands on a 1.25 WR2. My guess is that it’s 100% a technique issue, and I’m excited to use this razor exclusively for the next few weeks as I usually grab whatever razor I happen to be in the mood for the morning of my shave. I’ll report back in a few weeks with my findings.

Great review and thanks for your observations. I love the more aggressive razors and ordered a 1.25 gap WR2 DC. I am going to load it with a Feather blade when I get it to get a good idea of what it can do. I love my Charcoal Goods Lvl3 DC but use a Pol Silver in that one. I do use a Feather in my Timeless .95 DC. Waiting patiently for my shipping notice from James.

Without having used a WR2 yet but owning various duFour razors in gaps from 0,48 thru 0,74 and BBS1 as well as trialing and owning the other razors mentioned, your experience comports exactly with mine (except prefer 0,54 DC for daily usage). Hopefully the WR2 will match the BBS1 and James can be talked into doing an 0,85DC. We shall see

WR-2 Day 4


I decided to use only the OC 1.15 side today, two passes only, minimal cleanup. Also, I took the Darwin handle off of my WR-1 to use with the WR-2.

Yesterday's shave was super close. I don't know if it was a hardware or software thing. In my experience, my closest shaves with any razor have come when using Lisa's soaps. Not that I don't get great shaves with anything else, but I connect with something about Lisa's soaps, both the Artisan and the old premium lines.

I was starting today with less growth today, so I took it easy. I didn't try to get a BBS shave, which I rarely strive for, but sometimes it just happens (like yesterday). The OC shave was very good. Again, slightly more efficient than my WR-1 .80 but smoother, as a few people have stated. Not an exceptional shave like yesterday, but it was pretty darn good. I don't have to go outside in the cold today, so I used my Clubman Citrus Musk mixed with WS-23 synthetic menthol for a nice chill.

Regarding the handle...I like the Darwin on the svelte WR-1 head. It didn't feel as natural on the WR-2. I wouldn't say it felt overly top heavy, just not as nice as it does on the WR-1.

Tomorrow, I am going to go even easier on myself and use the SB 1.05 side only.
