IMHO, Cremo can gunk up most razors pretty bad. My water is very hard, which doesn’t help, but Cremo is one of the worst I’ve tried in that respect.

Do you have any suggestions on a cream that is as slick and protecting, but won't gunk up a razor... Or do those two just go hang in hand?

Yep, I think I'm going to like the OC for the beard clearing aspect. I only shave every 3-4 days, so it's more than stubble I usually contend with. I'll have to work with the RR a few more times to see how I really like it. Still, at this price, I think I found a gem (and likely one the OP would like?).

I took the same approach when I began wet shaving about six months ago and ended up with several "cheap" razors when my best money would have been best spent on the Rockwell 6C. If you go out on their site and setup an account, add the 6C to your cart but not complete the purchase, they should send you a coupon (I think 10% off). I learned more with the Rockwell than with any other razor I own.

Italian Barber (Razorock) sells a razor called the Game Changer which is one of the best values in shaving for $55. The GC has new drops usually once a month so you want to watch the twitter and Instagram feeds for when this happens.

I just ordered a Fatip Piccolo special edition from Gifts and Care so I cannot speak to the razor yet, but the price sure us right.

I also agree with scouring eBay for a slim. If you're patient, you can get a pretty fair deal. If you're budget increases to $50-$60, you can snag a Fat Boy.

I concur with boilerphan above, the Rockwell razor is excellent and with the 3 double sided plates you can go from super mild beginner mode all the way up to expert with only one razor. I have a 6s which I love and its a little more expensive than the 6c. I assume the 6c shaves as well as the 6s and it comes in at a very reasonable price. Now if I'd bought a Rockwell as my first razor, would it have been my last razor? Well, it could have been but in reality I'd find resisting all those other shiny objects very hard. That said, I use the Rockwell 6s waaay more than the Wolfman WR1.

If a Rockwell isn't your choice then I'd say a EJ DE-89, very nice razor that won't break the bank and it shaves nicely.

My favorite is Wholly Kaw's tallow / donkey milk formula (love the Lav Sublime scent, but there are many to choose from). I just use an inexpensive Razorock synthetic brush, nothing fancy. I use Van der Hagen Shave Butter brushless for travel, but my nose is telling me the formula has changed. It's ok, but not on the same level as WK.

Recently, I've been brushing on another coat of WK after the last shaving pass instead of using alum ad/or balm. I leave it for a few minutes while I clean the brush and razor. They also make a balm, a toner, and a splash, but I haven't tried those yet (mostly because I'm not sure which variation to get). My skin seems to really like the post-shave application.

RR Tek II/DE1 is like a Tech but no it's not identical. It's as good as Gillette's in terms of shave in many of our opinions. . The earlier Baili Tech type razor (RR Is a rebranded Baili) with the exposed blade tabs does appear to be a clone of a British Tech and is a fine shaver as well.

Can't beat a brass Tech for build quality though.

Gillette isn't making DE razors anymore but you can get an excellent used Tech for cheap and it shaves as nice as it ever did.  In the new razor world the Feather AS-D2 shaves very close to a Tech, but its not cheap.

I had a couple of Techs replated in gold and one in nickel (plus a Fat Boy in nickel) by Chris at Razorplate - they're beauties. I gave one of the gold Techs to my son and kept the other for me
