It sounds as though unless excessive force is used the mechanism doesn't come into play, making it a 'passive until needed feature'. Is that a fair description?
Mostly the pivot does not come into play at all. It seems to only function going around corners to keep the correct angle, or if a lot of pressure is used. It is not a loose or floppy pivot like what you would find in a cart. Much tighter, coming into use only when absolutely needed. Some users don't notice it at all.
The spring of the pivot is self contained (as well as being Teflon coated), sealed within the base of the razor head. It is not exposed in any way, and therefore will not be damaged by external influences. No extra cleaning or lubing required.
