Wolfman thoughts

I know this has been brought up before but no updates since September and the ever elusive waiting list that hasn't been opened since and the cluster mess it was last time.....

Is this razor really worth waiting two years to get at his asking price (let alone the insanity of the secondary market) or have others like timeless that have come to market recently offering as good a shave with as good a product without all the drama and wait made the wolfman less desirable or dare I say not the only Ferrari on the block? Charcoal goods also comes to mind in this discussion? I have both the aformentioned and frankly the craftsmanship from both those makers is exceptional. I've shaved with a borrowed wolfman and frankly I could understand the hype a couple of years ago, I'm having a hard time garnering it now with competitors in the marketplace with personalization in head diameter, and monogrammed handles etc also made by virtually the same process.

Thoughts ?

Used a wolfman in a pass around. Wasn't all that impressed honestly. It was nice looking, but it won't give the superior shave some are looking for. It has become another unobtainium object like the newest iPhone that idiots line up around the block for for no reason IMO. It doesn't do anything that the old version didn't do (Meaning if you are looking for the holy grail of wet shaving you probably already have it sitting right in front of you).

I have always been impressed with the fit and finish of Wolfman. Had 4 different razors pass through my hands. Shaved with 3 and always loved the smoothness to the skin. Bought the ones I had the chance to get at a normal retail price.

I have kept my BBS-1 and will likely get a Timeless and/or Blackland this year.

What razor are you after and what do you use now? That may help me give you and honest opinion of what you should do.

I have both the Wolman OC and Timeless OC. The Timeless has the fit and finish approaching that of a Wolfman's. The only difference of note is the inside of the Wolfman top cap is finished to the same standard as that outside where the Timeless is not. The big difference is that the Timeless is readily available. I have found both to be very smooth and efficient razors. If I were limited to just one, I could be equally satisfied with either. I would not chase a Wolfman on the secondary market at the current rates. Your best chance to score a Wolfman at retail is to join Twitter. James posts when items are available online. In fact he made just such a post this week.

They certainly were all the rage when they came out.

It reminded me when the Feather AS-D1 was introduced some years ago.  Great design, build, fit & finish and on. I eventually gave mine to my brother who now prefers his Merkur Futur.  I found the shave to be good, not great, and somewhat rough.  It just wasn't that smooth. I much prefer the Blackbird that Shane offers. I just think it's a smoother razor and better overall design. I have a Timeless on the way so looking forward to that.

I really don't get this rush for stainless steel DE/SE razors and  their holy grail status. Most guys shaving with a Mach 3 a few years ago are now demanding stainless steel thinking they actually shave better than pot metal or brass. Don''t leave a blade in them they will rust as well.  

I have been shaving with the new Parker Variant which is a much improved copy of the Merkur Progress. Wonderful razor that gives a smoother superior shave than the 2 Wolfman's I owned in various blade gaps. A brass frame satin coated $57 razor that is better, for me than the Wolfman was. Stainless can be overrated.

Never owned a Timeless, although I have only ever heard good things about them.

I did own a Wolfman (closed comb), briefly, which I acquired new, just over a year ago. There is no denying the fit and finish was superb, however, I sold it on after a few shaves. It did the job pretty well, but it was not one of the smoothest shavers I've owned. Would I wait those lengths of time to acquire one, again, now? No way.

I've tried several DE razors over the past 7 years, yet I always keep returning to my trusty Merkur 1904. The cheapest razor I have ever owned, finish not the greatest, but it simply does the job so well, for me.

The wolfman's that I have are very good, just a bit above the Timeless, the blackbird is in first place. Wouldn't pay the prices I have seen, I bought two from James and the others where traded for other stuff.

There have been sales of stock razors from the website, I've got 2 Wolman's in different blade gaps and a few of the handles, they are the most consistent smooth shavers I have (desert island razor), and look pretty good on the counter. If you want one they are attainable and IMO you won't be disappointed.

The Wolfman is a beautifully made razor but I never could get a great shave. I had the standard blade gap which didn't feel all that mild to me and so I would not have wanted to have had it increased. Timeless on the other hand gives me a very close shave and is also more comfortable to use. The Wolfman is the best looking razor on the market and it will give a nice shave but in my case it just wasn't close enough.

I have a stainless and two aluminum Wolfman razors. For whatever reason, I prefer the two aluminum models to any other razor I've tried. They are incredibly close and comfortable. I can use them every day without any discomfort, which is not true of many razors for me. I like the Timeless I have too, but not as much as the Wolfmans. Haven't tried the Blackbird. Hopefully I will soon.
