Okay, I just skimmed the article.  I want to know why this isn't opt in instead of opt out.  No one should have his or her privacy taken away unless permission is given first, not the other way around.  Certainly, there should not be so many hoops to jump through.

when I was setting up the wife's windows 8.1 laptop a few months back, it kept telling me I needed a windows live account to set up the user account...well, I didn't have a windows live account. hitting cancel bypassed this, but it was certainly annoying.

I just upgraded. Yes, I was thinking about it that long. Finally, a trip to Staples and some time on a demo computer convinced me that it wasn't Win8.

Its not horrible. I can use it. They did hide some things, like Control Panel. And they appear to want to phase out Outlook Express for Edge. Phooey on 'em both. I'm switching to Firefox. I had to anyway. OE and Silverlight could no longer play Netflix selections reliably... Really? So Firefox is in and OE is on it's way out. Also swapping to Thunderbird for email.

I just plugged a mic in today to use Cortana and that wants my life history so that it can "work". So I decided I don't want to use it after all. I can continue typing questions and such. The mic has a switch to shut it off. It's off. I think I have all of the other built in spy ware shut off as well, or as much as I can shut off where we have a choice.

One thing I don't like is the app store and the "free" games that will ask for $. They have been uninstalled; as many of them as I've found so far. I know there have to be more of them. I'll find them all eventually.

But still learning Win10. As I wrote, it's not horrible. We have a laptop that runs win8 and it sees absolutely no use. It's not even a good anchor for $300+.

I have 2 laptops I run Windows 10 on. Both were upgraded from 8.1 Here's the deal...

If you like Windows 7, Windows 10 will be fairly intuitive for you. If you liked XP, you are going to frustrate yourself looking for things. They are under "Settings", not "Control Panel".

If you liked 8.1, this upgrade is the least fo your problems...lol

Control panel is still there, just not obvious. One needs to search for it. But once found it can made easy to find in many ways.

Now I need to figure out how to export my fav's from OE to get them into Firefox.

It's easier with Chrome. I've been using Chrome on everything since it came out...

Is there not an "Import Favorites" option for Firefox?

There probably is I just haven't looked around. I was addicted to computers at one point and I'm almost a Luddite now... almost. I am extremely reluctant to delve into the innards too much. I remember what I was like back then.

I'll figure it out at some point when I fit it into my schedule. Back when I would change my schedule for the machine. I won't do that anymore. Now it exists for me. I'll get to it by and by.

My son upgraded his desktop to 10 and found a lot of his games didn't work on 10. He took his computer to the shop on campus to have 7 put back on.

As an Electrical Engineer - I still cannot understand why Microsoft does what it does.

But I see it backfiring on them. More and more folks are switching to Apple and I almost did myself. They angered me that much with W8. I tried to find the phone number of the CEO to voice my complaint directly to the top, but I was unable to find it. If there had been an OS available that was easy to use for an IBM type PC I would have jumped ship in a heartbeat. That's what took me so long to decide to upgrade. If anyone comes up with one I'm history as far as MS goes.

Microsoft has said that this is the last version of Windows it will produce. From here on out, any new updates or security requirements are suppsed to he application or patch-in updates.

With everything in software making the move to cloud-based EULAs, it makes sense to stabilize the platform and move forward as a cohesive OS instead of trying to rebuild the wheel every couple of years with a ground up restructuring of the same old bloated OS...

I have no idea how you gentlemen do it, but I haven't used Windows in over 15 years. I have been using Ubuntu Linux, exclusively, and I would never go back.
