The Next Big Breakthrough?

What will it be? A blade made of or coated with some synthetic material that will last a year? A synthetic fiber that retains water & heat like the best hair brush? How about a laser razor?

I think that any real improvements with soaps/creams will be more aesthetic than performance wise.

At this point I will state that IMO the biggest breakthrough in the past five years at least has been the rapid and incredible advent of synthetic brushes and moreso how each successive "generation"of such has been beyond belief.

Suspect we're in the midst of it with revolutionary postshave skin conditioning improvements being pioneered by Grooming Dept, Wholly Kaw Donkey Milk, CRWS....

My take would be to give the biggest nod of the past five years to OneBlade for their razor. Some of their business practices have been been questionable to many, but you can't argue with the design on the steel razors.

We'll continue to see improvements in soaps and creams.

It would be great if they would come up with a synthetic brush that would hold water. Holding heat would be a nice bonus.

I'm currently doing research on a post shave balm that I'll bring to the market. So far, all roads come back to sufficient lanolin to make a difference. I don't know if other men will react the same way I do, though lanolin brings significant improvement to small skin breaks and roughness in a 24 hour time frame for me.

Soaps and creams are like smartphones. There comes a point where they can't really do much more to improve them IMO. Unless the lid of your favorite soap comes with facial recognition/ beard mapping capabilities.

As regards the actual shaving part we've hit the PODR (point of diminshing return) IMO. There are those who will pay big bucks for artisan shave soaps/creams and that is fine & dandy as capitalism works that way and it is their money. I do it myself to some extent. However, there is no high dollar one that actually shaves marginally better than say an Arko or Palmolive tallow stick, or Tabac or Valobra for that matter. What people are actually paying for is more "sizzle" and not "steak". Some may not like this, but there is far more confirmation bias at play than most are willing to admit.

Most won't believe it though because they aren't going to concede that they spent north of $200 for a razor that doesn't really shave any better than something that costs $5. Don't even get me started on the price of a Oneblade.

I use a Gillette Tech for easily 90% of my shaving and to be frank I willingly admit that the old Schick injector razor is the better "mousetrap", but blade selection being what it is I don't use mine that often.

I have yet to try one and want to, but I am not going down another rabbit hole to spend more $$$ lol. l'm trying to enjoy what I have now with the occasional purchase here and there. I bought a timeless for the look/fit/finish, but I highly doubt it will be any better than my $5 SS shave wise.
