Thater Shedding - what could possibly be wrong.

Gents, I had acquired a thater 4125/3 few years back. It was a tad bigger a knot for my taste so sold it off to someone a month back.

Yesterday, that person called me and stated that the brush is shedding hair 3-4 during each shave. Now, that's unusual as this was not how the brush behaved when it was with me.

He is loading the brush properly as he with other brushes. He is using the brush 1-2 times a week which means that he is giving time to the brush to dry in between shaves.

What could be the reason behind this shedding? How to avoid it further?

Pls share your experience and inputs.

If this brush was indeed NOT shedding when you sold it, then it is my opinion, that you are NOT getting the full truth from the buyer. If it were me, I would block him and move on.

yeah I dont know how a brush can turn from a non-shredder to a Shredder.......

If it has been a few years since you have sold the brush, I would attribute the shedding issue to two factors;
1. the current owner somehow caused the problem by misuse, applying too much pressure while bowl or facelathering or using excessive hot water
2. it is possible that the brush could have reached its end, for whatever reason.

Personally, I would surmise the first.

Thanks Gentlemen. I was wondering if hard water had anything to do with the problem. Water at my end is user friendly and at the other end not quite so. I couldn't fathom any other reason..

Based purely on what you are saying and assuming it to be the truth....

I would say you are being set up for a Paypal dispute and subsequent claim
for a full refund.

There is no foolproof way to selling on Paypal but I follow the following rules:

1. Never deal off your forum username and PMs alone. (PayPal would not recognise 'Jags')

2. Use both parties Paypal email address to set up a conversation.

3. Seller should clearly lay out the conditions of the sale, delivery windows, detailed verbal and visual condition
of the item.

4. Do not proceed with sending request for payment unless buyer has approved the conditions plus the condition.

5. Take date stamped pictures of all items as as well as items as they are being readied for postage.

I have had some guys back out from going through such a detailed process but the majority know that this protects both parties.

Never had a single problem. Even sold a horrible shedder Shavemac once. But it was described as such, and priced at a paltry $35.

I purchased 2 Thaters from a very respected member of a European forum a few months ago. Both turned out to be terrible shedders. You can imagine, after the first one started losing hair, I was very very careful with the second one. So it certainly wasn‘t due to any fault of mine.

It was also the case that these brushes had not been used by the seller in several months and had been stored in their original boxes. Possible of course that the area of storage had high humidity or an environment that wasn‘t great for brush life, but I personally think it must have something to do with the glue used in the knot. I expect that when it dries out and rests for months to years, it loses it‘s hold.

I gifted one of them and sold the other as a shedder for next to nothing.

By the way, Thäter has a reputation for terrible customer service.

Quite simply (in my experience) a brush that never shed in years of use may begin to shed.

There are thousands, and thousands of hairs in a shaving brush. 

Losing a few per shave is certainly annoying, but I have had a shedder eventually stop shedding and if you never knew it had been shedding hair you couldn't tell by looking at it.

As for the buyer/seller aspect ... the warranty, if there was any expressed or implied, is long since expired after a month, let alone years.

I have maybe a dozen Thayer brushes. None of them have ever shed. I once destroyed a very nice silver tip brush, eShave by applying too much heat to the water in the scuttle. It went from a great non shedding brush to a prolific shedder right away. Maybe that’s what your guy did.
