Share your Asylum Rx impressions

Greetings Fellow DFShavers!

I am expecting an Asylum Rx razor coming from a fellow member and would like to invite those who own or had a chance to use this razor to share their experiences. Until recently I used predominantly DE and straight razors. The only SE I have ever used was Mongoose B3, which, while performing relatively well, was never my favorite or a daily driver. Looking forward to your impressions!

The finish & feel of this razor are excellent. I like the satin finish & it's design/shape is wonderful.

On first glance I thought the handle grip was too small but it works really well, nicely balanced.

I have not used an AC blade razor before so it has taken 3 or 4 shaves to get use to it. The wider blade is difficult to get used too, the head is very compact though.

The shave is more like an Artist Club or straight razor. I have only used the Feather Pro so far but this is designed to take the KAI Captain, Sharp & Titan Mild blades.

I have been making a slightly slicker lather for this razor, the wider blade does create more drag than a DE. However the Feather blades are very sharp & the weight balanced nicely to the head. As long as you let the RX do the work it shaves great.

Had my third shave this morning with the Asylum Rx. Very well built, feels like a very high quality razor. Good shaves, very efficient, and there is definitely a good amount of 'blade feel' to this razor. While it feels aggressive, it actually shaves very smoothly. Whereas the Cobra Classic has less blade feel to me, but shaves more aggressively.

Of course this is all subjective, and I'll need some more shaves with the Rx to dial it in. Used a Kai Captain Mild blade today instead of my usual Feather AC Pro, again, a very good shave.

One small thing on which I could use some assistance: I'm having a devil of a time getting the blade out after a shave. I don't keep my blades in my razors after the shave, but when I go to take the blade out of the Rx, it sticks. I watched the YouTube videos, and they looked like they were done with a dry razor and blade. Perhaps some of the lather and the water got under the blade and caused it to adhere to the bottom. I tried a vigorous rinse, and a few spritzes of alcohol to dislodge whatever may have been underneath the blade, to no avail.

I wound up taking the razor apart and lifting the blade out by the ends. This happened with my two shaves with the Feather AC Pro and the Kai Captain Mild this morning.

Anyone else finding this? Any ideas or suggestions?

It seems FAR over-priced for a neophyte's first attempt at making a razor. There are a couple of stooges wafting the flames about this razor with "sincere reviews"... your perspective I would take more seriously. In any event, I hope you enjoy your new razor. good luck ejecting the blade!

Some neophyte. He took 3 years to develop and perfect the razor. I give him all the credit in the world it is a great shaver with impeccable quality and build.

to Phil's credit, he had this razor designed a lonnnng time ago. from what I recall, he just had a very tough time finding a machine shop that could produce the razor as it was designed on paper.

I did not know this was not his first razor? I stand corrected if so.

From what I recall the project started 3 years ago (as the HuntLee razor- btw I don't know how much credit Lee Cantor deserves in the process). It hit some snags and stalled and was shelved for some time. It appeared for a while it may not be realized. Along came the Mongoose, the Oneblade etc with a resurgance in SE tools and three years later the project was resumed and completed.

It's built like a tank. I could probably use it as a small hammer!
The safety bar is a bit recessed, so it will let you feel ALL of the blade edge. It'll bite if you're not careful.
