Let's talk hones!

I'm about to throw down for a full progression and thought it'd be cool for everyone to talk or show off their hones! I've seen some pretty awesome Naturals elsewhere and would love to see what you guys have got. Any stone goes!

I love my Naniwas. I really haven't had any desire to use anything else since I got them.

A day late and a dollar short...I just sold off all my hones. They were shapton's so nothing special.

What progression (line and grits) are you considering?  Odds are good that I can help you with your decision.

If anybody is looking for an EXCELLENT finisher, please check current eBay listings for the La Lune (purple) hone. It is being offered there for (in my opinion) a reasonable price with a best offer option. I already have a purple la lune of this size and it clearly outperforms my Eschers.

My own personal progression starts with the Chosera 1K bevel setter then Chosera 3K Chosera 5K, Naniwa Snow White 8K Naniwa 12K Suehiro Gokumyo 20K, I hone on average i would say about 8 razors every week although this can vary sometimes I can get 15 or more razors in, I very much like the exactness that synthetic stones offer I have absolutely no interest in playing around with naturals.

As always, Jamie makes good sense. But since I only keep my own Mid sized collection in shave ready condition, my time spent on natural stones is time well spent for me. Besides, I love the fluffy smoothness of a properly executed coticule edge. And there's the rub ...
properly executed! Jamie can repeat his edges, and literally predict them. Every once in a while, we may miss with a natural stone, but, then we get the opportunity to try to figure out where we went wrong!

In any case, I've got naturals that are "as good as it gets" in each category. I;ve also got a set of Superstones, which I don't particularly care for, and not because they don't work.

So, I've got a 1K Chosera and a 3K Professional (the Chosera replacement.) I plan on the 5K Professional and the 20K Gokumyo... Still havent figured out the 8-10K stone.. But, I will be trying the synthetic edge. If it's crispier than I like, I still have my foolproof La Veinnettes!

My personal stash is a Chosera 1k for bevels and a DMT 325 plate for lapping if needed. Then I go 1 of 3 ways just depending. I have a vintage coticule that's a natural combo. No idea of the vein but it's fine and slow and the edges I get from it are butter. Not the keenest edges, but oh so smooth. I also have an Ozuku w/a full Nagura progression (including koma nagura) and several tomos (suita, ozuku, nakayama) to choose from. That setup never fails. Super keen yet also super comfortable. Finally, I also have a wonderful yellow/green Escher. I usually just use it for touching up razors if they're slipping. Honestly, once the bevel is nailed and the razor is brought up to shave ready I think I could keep one going forever with just proper stropping and 30 or so laps on that escher a couple of times a year. I just honed up a cheapo Gold Dollar on the coticule that I'm going to try that with. I'm going to do nothing but strop it and when it tugs take it for a few laps on the escher and just see how long it can go.
