Might as well jump on to this thread, am considering picking up a straight and if that goes well I'll probably get some hones as well, so what progressions would you all recommend for general upkeep?

And if I end up making a razor or needing to re-bevel one, what additional recommendations would you have for bulk metal removal?

This question can be as easy to answer or as hard as one wishes to make it.

If you have a shave ready razor, and you simply maintain it every dozen shaves or so, you can get by with the 10K or 12K Naniwa SuperStone. I've heard of folks preferring the 10K over the 12K, which can get harsh, for me. If you wish to start from scratch, a 1K, 5K, and possibly 8K if you chose the 12K. Options and opinions on this could be all over the map, but I think that's a pretty good starting point.

I would also recommend the Naniwa 12k 0r 10k for touching up. I would add chromium oxide on a strop or balsa afterwards personally. I find it smooth
s it out.

For bevel setting, I would suggest the following:

Budget minded - King 1200
Best overall - Chosera 1000
