Grim,

I am in complete agreement with you.
It is not difficult to guestimate when you have enough lather.
Any that does not touch your skin is wasted.

I find with most soaps, croaps or creams I do not need any lather for the touch up.
Whatever residue is left on the face and a little water is sufficient.

My one exception out of several dozen lather makers is Wilkinson Shaving Soap. We are not compatible. It never gives me a good lather even after soaking overnight.

kwisher is right. One can feel when the lather is sufficient.
One may also see that "enough" phenomenon in the lather bowl.

Three passes plus a touch up? No way! I have enough to share with a couple of other shavers, a group of Sherpas, and my little poodles.

Load like there's no tomorrow is my motto!

After going through this very interesting complete thread from 1 to 8. I have not seen my primary reason for wet/traditional shaving.

It is simple, sheer PLEASURE.

One may spend as much or as little in this shaving thing and have as many or as few accessories as suits her/his taste and pocketbook yet still derive great satisfaction from merely - s-h-a-v-i-n-g.

I am completely happy with the uncomplicated bare minimum but I do occasionally splurge. However I always return to my inexpensive very old single edge razors and SCC (soap, croap, cream), Rolls or GEM razor and Aqua Velva aftershave. As Porky pig always said: "Ththththat's aaall ffffolks".

For me, KISS is the rule that may once in a while be ignored.

I am fairly new to double edge shaving, brushes, and soaps and creams.  Even while learning the techniques of making lather and applying no pressure, I was having fun. That is something that really strikes me as odd!  Fun shaving, enjoyable, and relaxing (until I get inattentive and get a nick!). That just seems odd, even "wrong", and maybe I should seek professional help. I don't find any other grooming to be fun. I don't think I ever trimmed my nails and thought, "yeah, great job, and what a nice feel"! So I am with Mickey on this on: Pleasure!

I know, imagine having 20 different toothbrushes and a drawer full of various tooth cleaning products. Just seems weird doesn't it?

I really don't care what others do. But I get a kick out of those who buy think the more expensive consumables in this "hobby" as being "too expensive", without taking into account cost/shave - and then compound the problem by being wasteful in using the consumable with justification thats "its pennies". Those pennies add up to dollars. You can't have it both ways. You can't say "product A" cost to much so I use "product B", and then be wasteful of Product B because its cheaper. IMO thats hypocritical, But its their money ...
