I’ll use it for the next week to gather more complete impressions
Black Velvet has no lanolin if that continues to be an issue.

Sorry, I have to jump in again with an endorsement of MdC Vetyver. I’ve been using it a lot, which is making its soap mates feel unwanted. Yesterday, I tried to buy another virtually unused tub on a BST but, fortunately (I think), someone else grabbed it first. It’s apparently available again (after an absence) on the MdC site, but I don’t even want to let myself visit. This is tremendous stuff.

I have been shaving with La Quatrieme Ville and really like the scent. I was wondering what it has in it and, now, after reading this thread EUREKA. If you can lay your hands on a tub of this by all means do so.

Here is the stated scent profile: The smell of La Quatrième Ville seeks to recapture that time of refined character and ambitiousness. A refined, masculine smell brings back the bustle of Forest Park during the World’s Fair: the woods, attractions and waterfronts are reflected in the vetiver, cypress, incense, nagarmotha, violet leaf, benzoin, and cardamom. Its a little more complex than a straight up vetiver.

A few good vetiver scents:

Shannon's Haymarket Vetiver- one of my favorite veriver scents. Strong scent with a citrus background
B&M Vetiver Santal (discontinued)
Cattie's Bubbles 322- amazing pungent vetiver decay
CB Ruds Suds- vetiver & coffee, unique blend
Mike's Vetiver- natural vetiver scent

I bought Barrister & Mann Vetyver Santal on sale as it was being phased out and discontinued.  It had been on my list at the time and being afraid I was going to miss out, I grabbed one off of Will's site.  I was new to Barrister and Mann shaving soaps(a late bloomer, so to speak  Big Grin ) and was very confused when the anticipated package arrived and I took my 1st sniff.  All I smelled was lemon.  What?  I went back to the website and sure enough the scent description said: "We blended a healthy dose of lemon essential oil with Haitian vetiver and elegant, creamy New Caledonia sandalwood absolute to create a light, clean, fresh vetiver scent... "  Ah, lemon.  But, it all worked out OK, because each of the essential oils revealed themselves, in turn,  throughout the shave!  This was a first for me in scents, so I was very happy with this purchase.  I still have some of this soap and enjoy using it every time.

Mike's Vetiver was my first vetiver soap and the one that started my love for the scent.  I also have Shannon's Haymarket Vetiver and thoroughly enjoy that one too.

This is no longer the case. Black Velvet is AVAILABLE. Black pepper & vetiver = awesomeness.

Vetiver Santal does have a heavy lemon presence. Citrus makes it more of a clean vetiver rather than a raw "dirty" kind of vetiver. Have a small sample of this scent and use it sparingly (same with Caldonia Rose) as it would be difficult to obtain more. Although soaps are made to be used, I Coloniali is another one that will be missed once its gone.

GI have an older tin of Mike’s vetiver.  I get the scent of grade school number 2 pencils being sharpened.  Vetiver?  Not so much.
Do I need a new tin or does anyone else get a “pencil” scent?

I have a new Mikes and don’t get the “pencil” vibe.
