head shavers...

I shaved my head last night after a shower. I used unrefined coconut oil and my headblade. the shave went pretty well, actually. the only downfall I see with using coconut oil, and possibly other oils (I have 1 due in on Monday from sir hare), is that is really clogs up the razor blades. I ended up having to use an old toothbrush this morning to get all of the clogged up hair and oil out from between the blades.

I think this MIGHT be where a disposable like the gillette guard might shine..

I think coconut and castor are best used in combination with other oils . You'll find commercial shave oils use mostly Grapeseed, Meadowfoam, and Vegetable Glycerine as primary oils as they tend to be less sticky.

I've been using sir hare shaving oil for my head shaves exclusively for my last 5-6 shaves. it's very light and nicely scented. the only issue I encounter when using any type of oils be it the sir hare oil or coconut oil is that it can REALLY clog up a razor that doesn't have good flow through...the headblade sport is one as well as cheap store brand 1 and 2 blade razors...

the best razor I've used with my sir hare shaving oil so far is my gillette guard. when I shave my head again in 1-2 days, maybe I'll give the coconut oil a go using the gillette guard to see how it does.

since I'm a few weeks in with shaving my head, I'd have to say that my gillette guard is my favorite razor to use to shave my head. I also really like the headblade if it didn't clog so easily. I really wish they'd develop some sort of adapter plate so we could snap DE blades in half and use them... I haven't tried any other 3+ blade cartridges yet, though I hear the gillette mach 3 and schick xtreme 3 are pretty popular head shavers...I might have to pick up some soon!

had to run into walmart earlier today to grab something before work. I didn't have a ton of time but I made a quick pass by the shaving section. walmart is selling their brand of the schick xtreme 3. I think there were 8 razors in the pack for like $4.50.. schick's own version of the same razor for an 8 pack is $9.34 (per walmart's site). not bad!

I didn't pick any up but I'll be back next week to grab a pack to try them out!

I forgot to update this thread.

For my last shave, I used unrefined coconut oil and a new gillette guard blade. The blade was super sharp and I ended up cutting a few bumps/pimples clean off my scalp, I believe, as I was bleeding pretty good from a few spots. Out came the styptic pencil to control the blood, which I absolutely hate because it's like chalk and it's messy.

The coconut oil works fairly similar to the sir hare shaving oil I've been using when using my gillette guard: neither of them really clog up the razor as the design of the guard itself lends itself well to minimizing clogging on/under the blade. that said, both of them tend to clog up multi-blade cartridges, like my headblade sport and other cheap disposables.

after the shave, I just threw out my styptic pencil as it was incredibly old and falling apart. plus, I was tired of dealing with a chalky mess. I ended up going on amazon and ordering an alum block from razorock to give alum another try.

I've used the alum block on my head and face now and I must say, it's not too bad. I'm not sure if the alum from razorock is just better quality than the alum I picked up from a local Indian store, but I haven't had the horrid MY FACE IS ON FIRE feeling like I had in the past when using alum. I also do not let the alum stay on my skin for more than 1-2 minutes. I apply it, let it sit a minute and then wipe it off with a damp towel before applying my aftershave.

I let my head heal for about a week after my last shave and just took some clippers to it yesterday in preparation for shaving my head with a razor tonight. in addition to that, I also picked up some new products...I grabbed some BumpStopper double strength from walmart as well walmart's knock off schick xtreme 3 razors.

The shave went pretty well and I only cut myself once. the downfall to the shave was that the oil was clogging up the blades here and there to the point where I had to use an old toothbrush a few times to clear up the oil/hair from between the blades - though not as often and bad as when using my headblade sport with oil or other cheap disposables, but enough times to get a little annoying.

I guess I'll need to adjust my routine to only use oil when using my gillette guard. everything else will probably do better when using a cream like headslick or cremo. maybe for my next shave, I'll use my gillette guard and cremo. I'll also pick up some headslick the next time I'm in the store...

that stuff aside, after my shave, I rubbed the alum block on my dome (minor stinging in a few spots) and then applied a small amount of the bump stopper double strength on my entire scalp. I must say, the one thing I like about the bump stopper over the cool fix from shaveworks is that it doesn't burn and it doesn't stink. That's my biggest gripe with the cool fix is that it tends to burn me immediately when applied before mellowing out and it stinks. oh, and it's expensive compared to bump stopper.

While I do not shave my head, it has been interesting following your journey, Andrew.
