Scentsless Shaver
Oakland, ME
Well said, Ken. And it really helped me see you, as an individual with life experiences so different from my own. I grew up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Very white. Very Scandinavian and Italian in heritage. Yet we got along. I liked to think of myself as not racist. But going to a big ten university, and then moving to other areas showed me that maybe I wasn't so perfect. My brother enlisted in the Army pre Desert Shield as a tanker. Then he got deployed to take part of Shield and Storm. He learned to not regard skin color or race, for the reasons you state. Getting out was eye-opening at times. Higher ups at a southern mill telling him to be careful, as he was seen hanging out with some black guys on his shift. Getting looked down on as a wind turbine crane operator for helping out and socializing with the hired Hispanic guys while working out West. But he tells me that one of his best holiday meals away from home was when invited to dinner by one of Hispanic guys. My brother said almost no one spoke English, and he doesn't speak Spanish, but a great time was had and fantastic food was eaten!
And I lost the point of where I was going! Anyway, your post serves to challenge me regarding my interactions with others. I just want to be real, and not worry about being triggered or triggering anyone else. It is finding the line between real communication versus being offensive because you disagree with the other's (perceived by you) state of being.

I appreciate the kind thoughts Ken but it would get better used with someone like MilkCrate than me........makes me happy when I see it though

Good times Eric. Your brother and I were "in" at the same time.
Life experiences sometimes get in the way of being "color blind" Same way some people are scared of dogs. Maybe they got bit when they were a kid. That kind of fear is hard to overcome. The military can't afford to tolerate people that project prejudices. I get really frustrated when I see administrations and politicians trying to use the military as some type of social experiment.
Your upbringing in that part of our great country. Didn't expose you to other cultures. But your college experience was prolly just as big of an education. As the classes were.  In my first post here. I state the fact. That I welcome anyone to challenge/debate or disagree with me on anything I post. It's called debate. And if you can enlighten me and we come to an understanding. Then we are better for having the discussion.
Navigating life and sticking to your core beliefs is all any of us can do. I have been discriminated against. I've worked with guys and gals that didn't like me because "I was white." And never had to "deal with what they had to deal with." When I pointed out that they were now actively forcing me to "Deal with what they were bitching about having to deal with" they got really pissed.  Like  a rapist trying to get a jury to understand that they committed the crime because they themselves were raped.
Guess it's "reverse racism". No biggie. The people that are racist whatever color they are. Are basically just a negative bummer type of person anyway. So no loss in not being around them.
The people that weaponize the differences  we have usually have an agenda. Most of the time enriching or empowering themselves. I call them Race Hustlers.
Ask yourself this. Would pro sports be worth watching if the modern affirmative action rules were strictly enforced in the NFL or NBA?  Are the percentages of players representative of Americas current racial breakdown? Are %63.7 of the players white? Nope. Why? The leagues are obviously racist. Right?  So they get a pass. And get to hire only the most qualified people to play professional sports.
For me, MLK is one person to study and be someone to emulate. I feel his teachings to be the most honorable. The current organizations have all usurped his fight. And now seek wealth and power. At the cost of more division and harm to our country.  If the ultimate goal of MLK was realized. They the race hustlers would be out of business. That would be a beautiful thing.
