I also feel the the old design is more ascetically pleasing than the new one.  In Brian's own words the new design will provide a slightly smoother shave.  I also notice that the new plate has 2 larger elongated holes as opposed to the 3 smaller ones on the old version.  This I believe was done to disperse the lather/soap more efficiently when using.  My only complaint with the old design is that it does get clogged with lather rather easily.  However, I still find it to give a great shave.  Giving what I believe would be a minimal improvement in the shave if any, I chose to stick with the old design & pass on the new one.  Although, if the copper were still available I might have splurged for one.

I own three Generation 1 Level 3 razors in brass. I have no interest in later generations, or other materials, as I can't imagine a better razor. I enjoy my Wolfmans, Timelesses, Blacklands, ATTs, etc., but the gen 1 L3 brass CG razor--both OC and SB--are the kings of my den.

I completely agree... I had three Generation 1 razors, all in brass, antique and shiny finish... I sold one of them so I now have two... a level 2 straight bar in antique finish and a level 2 open comb in shiny brass finish.... These razors are the best in my den. I recently purchased the newer version in stainless steel, a level 2, and tbh, it doesn’t shave as well for me as the generation 1 brass razors. It’s actually quite a bit more aggressive imo. I’m a bit let down as not only does the razor not shave as well for me but it doesn’t look as good either... the gen 1 razors is seriously where it’s at imo! I really like Brian a lot but I feel like he had it “right” before, offering the gen 1 razors that shave amazingly, look absolutely incredible and unique, and were offered in a variety of metals, levels, and baseplate options. I wish it was still that way tbh. But I wish Brian success, he seems like a great guy and awesome to do business with. I feel very lucky to have these razors.

hmm, I cant say I share the same opinion on gen 2 vs gen 1.

gen 1 looks significantly better, other than that it's six of one, half a dozen of the other, IMO.

my gen 1 lvl 2 in antiqued brass is my favorite but mainly because it's the best looking razor ever put on the market. the CG I actually use is my gen 2 lvl 2 SS.

I thought it was just me, but I totally agree. The older plates are more unique & better looking.

I do prefer the look of the bar guard on the Gen 1 CG baseplate. I doubt if it is 'better' in terms of shave quality. At least I cannot tell a difference in the shave, nor the end result. Gen 1 on the left, gen 3 (I think) on the right.

+1 Brian is a Legend and one of the most personable, kind, generous souls I’ve ever met. I feel privileged to interact with him and use his artistic creations.  I don’t think I’ve used anything but Gen 1 pieces. I’m keen on longer handles, CG has given me that 95-101mm option.

I love ALL my CG pieces, however if I was forced into 1 only, mannnnn, LOVE ALL the metals..... Gen 1, L1 DC Brass.  Idk, this one has a special place, doesn’t matter what blade, it’s a smooth operator!

I’ve never owned a CG  razor, and am thinking of buying a SS Lvl 3.

I am happy to float between DEs and artist club SEs.  My most efficient safety razor is an Asylum RX.  Seconded by an R41.  I also have a Wolfman 115/125 that I just love for daily shaving.

Would a CG Lvl3 bring anything new to my rotation, esp since I have the RX?

It absolutely would, you won’t regret purchasing one. I prefer efficient razors and my brass and copper CG Lvl 3’s will never leave the den.
