Blackland Adjustable: Osprey

Now following...I have become very interested in adjustable razors recently.

Always loved your work Shane, I would certainly support a Blackland adjustable ESPECIALLY one you describe in your posts….. I speak for my brother and G-Pa too

I can’t wait for this one!! I am late to the game but those that know me, know that I have just about every modern adjustable razor made and this one looks amazing! From what I know about Shane and Blackland, this one will be aggressive enough to please me! Hopefully you will also offer an additional baseplate in an OC for it that can be swapped. I love that about the original Tiaga. I sometimes put the stainless OC plate in my titanium Taiga. I also think this would be a great design if you did an adjustable single edge razor down the road. I am loving this project Shane! Bravo!!

Sooo … the Dart was an odd razor. Some considered it mild, and some considered it very aggressive. Many loved it, but some found it bloodthirsty. In my (unsolicited) opinion, the downfall was at the corners, which could be treacherous in the hollows of the neck (depending on grain direction and of course individual anatomy). The rounded ends trimmed the safety bar pretty close to the blade corner - not a problem on cheeks, but …. For me, it didn’t bring enough efficiency to justify the attention it demanded on my neck.

The second video for the adjustable mentioned shortening the head to save weight. To some extent, that probably makes sense, but it would be easy to go too far and bring back the same treachery. Of course, I’m not looking at dimensioned drawings ….

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. DE blades don't really have corners, per se. They're rounded off. So being close to the "corner" isn't nearly the concern it is on something like a GEM blade which has true corners. Either way, the adjustable isn't so narrow that this is a concern so I think you'll be okay. It's like the Blackbird which also narrows toward the cutting edge.

Shane, I’ll be honest. With the collection I have, nothing has excited me over the past couple years from an innovation standpoint except the Home Like Shaving Taiga Slant but who knows when or if we will EVER be able to get that one because it is coming out of Russia. I also love the design of the Tatara Muramasa Adjustable but it’s not aggressive enough and the handle is too short. This new adjustable actually has me drooling as I watch your videos!

I'll try to find the Dart and get some pics. There's still some unpacked boxes from moving back into our house recently after a year+ of renovations. I agree that this is not an issue on the Blackbird.

Blackbird on the left, Dart on the right. This overhead view isn't the best way to show the issue, but I was having trouble getting the blade to show up well from other angles. I'm looking at the distance from the "corner" to the guard edge at roughly 30 degrees from the edge. What the photo doesn't show is that both razors have positive blade exposure, so for the Dart it doesn't take much concavity in a hollow for the blade to bite.

Shane, as you noted, the blade corners are slightly rounded. I don't know whether it was the honed edge or the stamping edge that was biting.

Of course, the guard design of the Dart made it outstanding around the nose and ears! Everything is a tradeoff, as you know all too well! 

The Blackbird (my daily driver since ~2018 I think, counting SS and Ti) does not have the same issue in the hollows of the neck, and it still works fine around the nose and ears.

Anyway, I don't have the drawings or a sample in hand. I'm NOT saying the new design will have this issue (and you've said it won't), just following up on why shortening the head to save weight made my ears perk up.

Looking great so far. Can't wait to try it!!!
