Bar soaps vs. body wash

today I made the plunge and ordered three body bars from three different artisans.  I know the scent will be great as I have had their soap and or aftershave in the past. Here's  the question.  How long will the bars last.  At 4.95-5.95 a bar and with shipping 21.00 for three bar soaps would be the equal of 5 bottles of body wash old spice or otherwise.... if it last 8-10 days that's about what a bottle of body wash last I have no problem supporting artisans and paying a premium, three days on the other hand...........

I get 3-4 weeks out of them on average. Depends on the size of the bar. Some are so big I cut them in half and they last a long while.

If you're looking for something a bit cheaper that's still from an artisan you might want to check out the RazoRock bar soaps up on Italian Barber. I got a couple with my last order and they're pretty nice. I'm using the first one now and I'm on my third week with it. I suspect it will probably give me about 2.5 weeks total. Not bad for $3 - $4. From what I've read the bars are made by Saponoficio Varesino.

I love bar soaps and they usually do not have that parabene und ionine crap in them that is suspected to cause cancer... hence I use organic artisan bar soaps only.

When I bathe or shower, I hate body wash. Give me a good bar soap anytime. If the cost comes out to slightly more per bath/shower than body wash, that is a cost I am willing to pay. For me, that is no different than the way I think about my shaving gear.

I am starting to come to your line of thinking on this.  Surprisingly after a couple of years of regularly ordering shaving soaps, and gear, I never even gave bath bars a thought, never crossed my mind.  After using artesian soaps the last couple weeks, I don't think I'll ever buy body wash again.  Skin feels better, softer, and as with shave soap, the scent possibilities and artisans to try are endless.  Worth the minor increased cost if it occurs. Excellent point Freddy, and I concur.  One added benefit is that the more of my dollars that can go to small business owners the better!

Soapy Bathman makes amazing body bars and shampoo bars. Both will last a long time (months) if you treat them right.

I'm not even sure that artisan bath bars are any more pricy than a body wash and they are exponentially better for your skin. I get about 3-4 weeks out of a Stirling bar and Soap Commander is going on week 3 now with at least a week left. Even if there is/was a premium I would still pay it as I'd much rather support a local artisan than P&G or Unilever.

My $0.02, make sure to get a mesh soap sleeve/pouch/bag to keep the bar soap dry. If the bar soap sits in a carrier and doesn't have the chance to dry out, it will last 1-2 weeks max. I've been using Soap Commander and L'Occitaine bar soaps and SC will last ~5-6 weeks and L'Occitaine around 2-3 (smaller bars).

Additionally I agree with all of the other aforementioned benefits of using artisan soaps instead of mass market body wash.

I just finished up one of my Bubbly-Wubbly Soapy-Woapy Stuff bars, which is about 5.5oz of soap. It lasted several weeks worth of washes, maybe 8? I didn't use it constantly so that's an estimate. It was in my shower for months.

One of our regular 3.5oz pucks style soaps will last a long time as the hand washing soap in one of our busier bathrooms (5 people in my house).

Method matters, too. I think if you're a "wash by rubbing the bar on your body" type it definitely uses up more soap that if you lather up a wash cloth, bath puff, etc.

Yep, this is very important. A soap dish with slots/a rack to lift the soap out of its own drips works, too.

Also, if you want to keep your soap in the shower or something, keep it somewhere that water isn't hitting it the whole time the shower is on. That just slowly melts the bar away while accomplishing nothing.
