jankdc posted a video on page 41 on how to use the OneBlade.

I tried it this morning and wanted to report.

This technique significantly improved the quality of my shave for the most part, which I'll explain shortly. It feels weird using the razor this way, though I expect to get used to it. Shaving in this manner, which effectively lets the spring control the angle of the blade and the amount of pressure gets it right every time for me.

It's kind of like one of those things that a computer can do better than a human.

Now, I did have trouble around my mouth. I got quite a few nicks, several of which required a styptic pencil to stop. Interestingly, the guy in the video has a goatee, so he doesn't shave that area. To be clear, I don't view my trouble from the first time using a new technique as being problematic. It will be a matter of learning the best way to handle that area. I may be able to refine the new technique, or do that part of my face the way I always have.

Going back to how helpful this technique proved itself. I always have some bumps that look like razor burn on the bottom of my neck. I also have a place under my chin that loves to get irritated. The new technique was right on the edge of magical in these areas.

Additionally, I've never gotten a close shave on the area under the right side of my jaw. Doing enough strokes to get close causes bleeding. I cam very close to BBS in that area this morning.

I do want to set expectations for those that give this a try. It feels weird in the beginning. I'm thinking that it will take about a week to have this technique feel normal as well as work out the kinks. I am at peace with getting some nicks as I figure out how to do the area around my mouth.

Who knows, perhaps some of you have already worked this out and can comment.

Pete, when I first got the OneBlade, I used it like any other DE razor, found the angle and then went at it as usual. Then, after experiencing some shaves with my second SE razor, the Mongoose, I learned about keeping the flat part of the blade against the face. I saw Steve's video, and gave it a go with the OneBlade and had very effortless close shaves. EXCEPT for me, the area under the nose and under the lips did not lend itself well to that technique. So in those areas, I just find the angle myself, and it goes just fine.

Putting the razor flat against the face does allow the OB to find the 'perfect' 31 degree angle with the pivot. But several commenters have said that even if you don't use it that way, and use it as you would a DE or SE, the pivot still operates, albeit subtly.

The other thing that I would add is that when I used the OB with the 'flat against the face' technique, I found that it felt like I had to use a little bit of extra pressure to get the blade to engage. This concerned me at first, but I realized that the pressure was necessary to engage the pivot, not add pressure to the blade against the face.

Thank you Michael.

I just went and watched OneBlades training video and they don't teach this technique. In a post from a few pages ago, you mentioned that after some back and forth that they said this technique is best.

I'm wondering why they would teach a technique that isn't the best way to use the razor. Do you have any thoughts on why this is the case?

Well, I should mention that I received my OneBlade a few weeks ago and I was using it while way on vacation.
Unfortunately, I did not get the best shaves with it. I am not sure if it was this particular razor as I had tried one that a friend had lent me a few months ago and I enjoyed it. Nevertheless, the new razor I received did not offer similar shaves. I actually noticed a bit of a 'smile' on the blade which cause it to be even milder than it already is which resulted in sub-par shaves.
I have already returned the razor and will be getting a refund.

The company offered to send me another razor, but as I live in Canada, I did not want to incur the shipping charges and any importing fees to, possibly, be disappointed, again.

Oh, well. It was an interesting experiment and the refund money will allow me to try the Timeless razor with both the regular and mild plates. Big Grin

The video I saw on their site (OneBlade How To Shave) demonstrated this exact technique, without describing it. Look closely.

So, they're showing, not specifically teaching.

If I were advising them, I'd tell them to not give specific advice on how to use the razor, as that could lead to some clever lawyer making the case that the specific instructions led to injury, etc., etc.

first shave tonight with the oneblade. I only do 1 pass and shave from south-north on my lower neck below my beard line. 'riding the pivot' was a little awkward as I had to rock the razor backwards from my starting point and apply some pressure. not the closest shave I've ever had and I did get 1 small weeper. I guess it'll get better with time!

oh, I used the supplied feather blade..

The first shaves will be a bit awkward. It needs a few shaves to learn how the pivot works, with a light pressure. It's a totally different experience than any other SE we know so far. Personally, it soon became my favorite razor, followed by the Schick Lady Eversharp Injector. I don't use my DEs lately.

Enjoy your new razor!

I just received my OneBlade and it has a smile with the feather blades as well. I haven't used it yet, and am not as excited to after seeing the smile on their intended blades. Did they hassle you about the $99 return fee or did they refund your entire purchase price? I'm debating returning it unused right now.

Andrew, You might try a GEM. It may be that the Feather is too sharp for your skin. How was the shave as far as irritation?

RSP1, you might email them and see if what their stance really is on the return. Your auto correct seems to have turned a word you meant into 'smile', what is the concern you were sharing?

I agree that the FHS is a quite sharp blade, but I find it to be ideal for this razor. It shaves closely and smoothly, at least for me.
