Problem solved. My technique was correct as SharpSpine had shared that video with me before. The issue is that I was pressing too hard. If you press too hard, the corners will get you.

As I thought about it, pressing too hard most likely lessens the quality of the strop as the the edge of the razor blade is so thin.

I wrote to OneBlade regarding my irritation about the glue and heard back from the CEO. I thought you all would find this interesting. It turns out that the glue has a purpose and there is another to remove it compared to running it under hot water and wiping. Here's the email:

Dear Pete,

Thank you very much for the helpful feedback! We are working with Feather to come up with a better solution regarding the adhesive on the blades. As you probably know, the 'glue' is on the blade in order to keep the blade edge from contacting the fold of the paper wrap.

In the meantime, here are two 'stop gap' solutions:

To clean the razor in general and certainly to get rid of any residual adhesive from the blades, soak your razor overnight in a concentrated bath of Simple Green. This is a great way to completely clean the razor.

For the blades, the best way to remove the adhesive is to soak them in alcohol for a minute or two or you can wipe them with a cloth with alcohol. Please be super careful to not cut yourself and also to make sure not to touch the edge on anything.

Generally, we encourage our users to ignore the adhesive and just clean the razor periodically due to the added dangers of extra blade handling. However, I completely understand your frustration and I am hopeful that we can come up with something much better soon.

Thanks for sharing that, Pete123 I got the same response from Tod after I wrote him about the issue (and sent a picture of how the blade was so sharp it cut me through a terry cloth towel while I was removing the glue).

Good info about the alcohol-makes perfect sense. And I've been using the Simple Green after every couple of shaves-works great.

I suggested the packaging that GEM uses, though doubt we'll see that - it would likely require a different packaging design and packing equipment, none of which is cheap.
