Your thoughts on OneBlade

WOW! Loved the video! I think this Aussie described the proper use of the One Blade Razor expertly! And, I have the One Blade Razor. And, I will try his advice and technique. I have found using this razor that the closeness of the shave is hit or miss for me and now after viewing this video I think I understand why??? Kudos jankdc !!!

This is what is referred to as "riding the pivot".

I also agree with his thoughts on how to get better blade life. The better your technique is, then the less degradation you are causing on the blade and therefore it will last longer.

I would definitely encourage any OneBlade users to get some GEM blades to try.  De-spining is easy - I knocked out a hundred in about ten minutes.  

You can de-spine them with a pair of pliers, though I found a nipper similar to the one below to make easy work of it.

Pete123, did you get to shave with the GEM yet? If so, could you notice anything immediately compared to the Feathers?

Yes, I have. I need to shave a little more with both, though it looks like the GEM is going to provide a much better experience.

One thing for sure, The despined GEM doesn't have glue on it. The Feather blades reduce the shaving experience for me because it makes a really cool razor with great lines look messy and the glue gets down on the cutting edge.

There are always exceptions but I would say for DE blades 3 shaves per blade is fairly common.  Seems when talking about SE blades (injector, GEM, Feather AC) 6-8 shaves seems pretty common.  What is it about the feather blade that they selected for the OneBlade that it seems to only be able to produce 1 to 2 shaves?  Do they only produce that result in any other razors they are used for?  Thank you.

The blade is actually thinner than the gems. Also, I think the edge is at a sharper angle so gets blunted easier. I don't have a valet, so this is the only razor that I've used them in.

I'm finding the razor interesting, but I haven't been able to get either a better shave than with my Neillite, 2013 R41, or bakelite slants, nor have I been able to get a quicker shave yet. I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

You cannot see the edge with your eye. Its finer than your eye can resolve. All "other" things being equal (i.e., same material, same hardness, etc.), the sharper the blade the quicker it gets dull. You are talking about edge thicknesses that can be counted in molecules. An easy way to see this is with Kitchen knives. Granted they don't all use the same steel and the angles are different but, for example, I have found that Japanese folded blades, like a Shun, get dull quicker than the European steel chef knives. The Europeans stay sharper longer and are supposed to be easier to sharpen but the Shuns are much sharper - scary sharp.

So its a tradeoff. Get a sharp knife but you sharpen it more often. Same here. Don't confuse this with using a steel on a Chefs Knife. Using a steel is not sharpening the blade.
