There seems to be 100% dis-agreement on the main reason or reasons for the write-off and loss of value.

Agreed on both counts. Though it's hard to imagine how one ad creates an $8 billion issue.

I liked the stated intent of the ad (probably not the real intent, because mega-corporation).

The implementation struck me as a bit flawed (as I recall, toxic masculinity was depicted by smiling, good-looking men exhibiting grills? The image seemed a bit...vague).

As mentioned before this was a “goodwill impairment” - done in a quarter where P&G reported outstanding results over all.

Gillette offers great products at a premium price - and is under pressure from competition and “Zeitgeist” with 50+% of men under 30 wearing a beard of some sort.

They will figure it out eventually - hopefully by providing innovative products that consumers love.

Wishing them all the best!

Another company that has learned not to insult its customer base in order to virtue signal to the crazies the hard way.

honestly this just goes to show how safe it is to make assumptions about people who say the words "virtue signalling" unironically.

Gillette says they will 'shift focus'.

People who liked the ad aren't really paying attention anymore, so they still got what they want.

People who want to 'own the [redacted]' get to proclaim victory and run the news around their little grift circles.

Both groups continue buying more than 6 Billion dollars worth of garbage dump filler made as cheaply and disposable as possible.

If Gillette was really sorry they would either 1. apologize publicly and as visibly as possible or much more likely 2. hire a damage control firm and attack their critics. If you look at what they are doing and think they've bowed to social pressure it's simply because you don't understand how international businesses work in 2019. But you know what if people want to invest their ego in whether a massive P&G subsidiary conforms to their social values by all means. I personally have better things to do with my life.

Yet somehow you took the time to share your innermost feelings with us. We're honored and now life seems somehow worth living.

Secretary Ramsey put his foot into it yesterday . . . in the course of his remarks he said that California “needs water and better society.”  “So does h-ll,” yelled someone in the crowd.
