Not a nylon washer, but a rubber or silicon donut. The washer will not compress or flex like the donut will. It will provide enough tension to allow the base plate to be loosened without it rattling. It usually is good for about .5 - 1 setting.

The same way the PAA ascension works with tension I guess.

The Ascension is an interesting design because the head is so curved that the blade itself becomes the spring (or donut). Very same principal though. This donut trick works better with heads that curve the blade. This New is relatively flat and so not much adjustment to fool around with before the blade sticks out perpendicular and becomes a Pils.

Okay, so this adjustable slant and silicone donuts discussion really got me hungry to try to punish my face more in the name of science (or stupidity). So first up, I put a silicone donut on the bottom of my Windrose B3 clone head because that was an exact copy of the original Walbusch pic that was posted (except it wasn't adjustable).

It did not seem to work out well as the cap and base plate was so heavy that adjustment was minimal (maybe only a 1/4 adjustment).

I then moved on to the PAA AES which is bakelite and so a lighter head. This seemed to work well as I could adjust almost up to a 1 adjustment.

Not the full range of adjustment, but enough to give an idea of how an adjustable slant would shave. I started out with the 1 adjustment and found that the blade stuck out too far and could catch on my loose skin and so I dialed it down slightly. It was noticeably aggressive, but cleared out a lot of whiskers on the WTG pass. I then dialed it down to what would be closest to the original AES setting and finished off with ATG and touch up. I ended up with a BBS after minimal touch up. This definitely shows the potential for an adjustable slant (or at least an adjustable diagonal slant).

Over the weekend, I will shave with an adjustable version of my favorite Frankenslant - the top cap of my Windrose B3 clone and an OC baseplate.

This little experiment makes me want to renew my interest in finding the Walbusch adjustable slant, but the ones I found in the past all required a mortgage payment and so I am not hopeful.

Sooner or later I'm sure some company will attempt one!

Oh nice.
Can we assume that this is you, nominating yourself? Or is it already a work in progress?

Nah. I’m making a non-adjustable one, but there’s no technical impediments to an adjustable mechanism caused by the slant geometry that I can tell.
Just one man's opinion, but I've got maybe 50, or more slant (twisted head they used to call them) razors. Old German vintage slants, many branded, many no-name. I used to feel Merkur made the best one, then Razorock came out with the Wunderbar and that took the # 1 spot in my slant den. The Razorock Stealth is good too, and the ATT S-1 and S-2 are nice.

I'm eagerly anticipating your contribution to the slant razor design Shane. It will be quite interesting to see what you finally come up with. I'm sure it will be a winner.
