I'm sure you know what you are doing but yes, a little strange. All I can suggest is a lighter handle if the WRH7 is solid. I thought my face was pretty sensitive but I have no problem with a .48 with GSB or Med Preps daily. Unless you received the wrong gap? Unlikely but possible.

Don't think a lighter handle will matter much. I suspect it is the positive blade exposure. All the other razors I have are neutral at most (WR2) or negative (Masamune and Karve B). Any razor I have ever had with positive blade exposure has been problematic. Including the Tatara Nodachi/Masamune combos which are neutral/just positive.
Looks like I need to shoot for neutral or negative exposure...

Have you tried using a steeper angle than usual?

I have not. Is the idea that by going steeper, I am going to reduce the blade exposure?

Using a steeper angle should reduce the blade feel and the amount of the blade touching your skin because you’re using more of the safety bar. It won’t be as smooth if you go too steep, so you’ll have to play with it a little bit.

First shave since my last 3 in a row today and your tip with the steeper angle might have been prophetic. I am generally a shallow angle shaver. In part because I ground my teeth early on with the Fatips which require a very shallow angle, and in part because I have a bunch of razors with negative to neutral exposure which means the angle to shave is pretty easy to find. My typical angle is not right with the WR1, so going a bit steepe seems to both make the shave smoother and the post-shave less irritated. Still not sure if I'll ever get "there", but I am at least going to try a few more times. Thanks for the tip.
