Winter is Coming (or rather, I'm Baaackkk!)

Friday we received 6"-7", then yesterday we received another 12", and another 6" is forecast for Wednesday night into Thursday. Why don't I live in the tropics again?! Oh, right, the lack of seasons and deadly insects the size of my head!

WOW, we've had a VERY wet winter but other than that REALLY cold snap recently, it's been the liquid variety. I miss getting a good snow......not weekly but a few a year. Enjoy it while ya can !

That snow looks great Eric. I love winter with snow and cold. I also love my cozy home and plenty of warming fuel! 

I live possibly 10-15 miles from MaineYooper, maybe less as the crow flies, and the beginning of the winter season, which can start in Maine in November was pretty nice, I remember mostly all liquid precip'. The snow we did get was gone in a short time. That was very unusual for Maine. But yes, now we're in a storm cycle where we get 2 storms per week and it was the white variety. The older I get the more I dislike snow and its removal. Don't remove it and very soon you'll be reminded of why it should have been removed.

Last night it was forecast to drop another 6-12" and follow up with rain and freezing rain. We got maybe 2" and then the rain on 20°F surfaces. But it's 34°F now and the snow is melting and dripping off the roof. Where the metal roof is steep enough it's sliding off, exactly what I like to see. Just be careful and don't walk under it as it's about to let go.

FWIW, yesterday my chores included roof raking the snow where it doesn't like to slide to prevent the roof from caving in. I had maybe 10" up there, then if we had gotten the 12" with rain I have no idea how much weight would have been up there, so it had to be removed. A roof rake does it and I don't need to get up there to shovel it off. My neighbors roof shoveling child has grown up and there's no one around to do it for me and earn a quick $50. Done right (pushing it) it takes less than 1/2 an hour. Roof raking takes maybe an hour or more. Hiring a kid is far preferable IMO.

Our weather cycles generally reset every 2 weeks and we're about due for a reset. Hopefully it won't reset back to another storm cycle. Fingers crossed. We can get anything and our worst storms can be ahead of us as the warmth and cold slug it out, but in another 1 1/2 months the suns rays will begin to have some heat in them and we'll be on the downhill side of winter. Yippee! But so far it really hasn't been anything to complain about. One year, 3 or 4 years ago we had 2 blizzards, real honest to gosh blizzards, in the same week. If we had gotten a 3rd I'd have been really up the creek because I was pretty much out of room to push snow.

edit: 3 hours later... OK, so I tried to use the plow on the truck to move this stuff. I can get it so far and no further. Heavy!?? Yeah. Extremely. I called my neighbor who will come by with his tractor and front loader to get rid of the berm I curled up. The rest can stay. Once it's frozen it won't be an issue because it's so saturated with water. It'll be like being on lake ice.
