My impression was that Edwin Jagger issues replacements as a matter of course, particularly for a new razor.

Of course FBs look cool , and brass Gillettes would be expected to do better when dropped, but durability and shave ability are two different things.

My hope is that the Ambassador would have something going for it in that regard beyond just a stainless steel build.

gillette is a classic - and just like old cars, old razors have their pros and cons.

As to the Ambassador - I will say that gillette was certainly an inspiration - both positively and negatively. They are damn fine mechanical devices - but they are not perfect.

The simplified adjustment design and SS material are a solution to adjustability while being robust and user friendly.

We are excited for its upcoming release!

Thx,

Matt

Deftly handled my friend. I'd love to have an Ambassador though grabbing Gibbs' and Apollos feels more urgent for now. I hope it does well Matt.

In addition to all the attributes mentioned above I think (as one member mentioned earlier) that the name "Fatboy" is a big part of the popularity.  Seriously, given the male culture, which would you rather have, a Fatboy or a Slim?  The Harley Davidson Fatboy is another classic with a following, heck, Arnold Schwarzenegger even rode one in Terminator.  When my son was younger and we were in the rocket building phase, he had to have the Fatboy.  It was short and fat and needed a big engine to go not very high but it was entertaining. They even named an atomic bomb Fatboy. Its just a great name.

Mark, didn't the names Fatboy, Slim, and Black Beauty all come from fans of those Gillette Adjustable razors rather than from Gillette, itself, and aren't they based on an obvious feature on each of them?  I cannot imagine that "male culture" had much to do with it.  For example, I much prefer the Slim to the Fatboy and it has zero to do with the male culture, whatever that may be, but rather with the quality of the shave and, ultimately, isn't that what it should come down to?

Yes, I believe you're correct as to the origin of the nick names, however, thats what they're almost exclusively known by and traded under today. The male culture reference was partly joking and partly in reference to the view that, no matter what we're talking about, bigger is always better. The Black Beauty name is probably the more common one though, anything both black and beautiful is almost automatically called Black Beauty. The horse for one, the famous Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum for another.

Scentsless Shaver
Oakland, ME
Just this past Friday I had my first Fatboy Friday shave, on the 1st, and also the first time ever shaving with a Fatboy! I love my Slim, and it is my desert island razor and the one I compare all others to. Occasionally I would toy with getting one, but the bigger head and comments regarding the schnoz kept me from buying. Well, that and prices! But recently I found out that the razor that lived under the sink of the the home I grew up in, shoved back into the corner were only prying eyes and hands would find it, was not a Super-Speed but a Fatboy! Last summer while visiting my folks back in Michigan, Dad was telling me he had been looking for the razor since I seemed to really enjoy what to him was a chore and he thought I'd like it, as it could be adjusted! He bought it new before going off to college in '58 or '59. When a nice condition E-2 came up for sale for a reasonable price, I decided to get it, if only for the nostalgia and link to my father's past (even though he never shaved with this one).

To get to the point, the Fatboy shaved well at a lower setting than my Slim, and my schnoz didn't seem to be in the way! It has a good heft to it (the razor) and seems slightly heavier than a Slim. I do like the longer handle on my Slim, but I see many more shaves with the Fatboy in my future.

I've liked all my Gillette adjustables. Prices have come down on them in the last year from what I have noticed. I got my nephew a fatboy off of fleabay for $40. It isn't mint condition, but nowhere near junk either.

I finally bought a 195 a few weeks ago. Excellent condition and $40. While I had no need for another razor, I'd always wanted to try one and it's my only adjustable. Gillette, in their instructions, advised setting the razor to 1 for your first and adjust from there. I popped a Feather in mine, set it to 1, and had a terrific shave. For the final pass, I set it to 2 and got an easy BBS shave. I find no issue getting under my nose. All in all, a great razor, especially at that price point. I'm not a collector so having original boxes, instructions, blades is of little interest and certainly not worth it to me to seek out those complete collectibles.

I only have two modern razors out of the nine I own (a Jagger and Feather AS-D2). While the AS-D2 is the best razor I've ever owned and used, I still enjoy using my old Gillettes. I have a couple BE Techs, Fat Handle Tech, old style and flare tip SS, and an Aristocrat as wells as the 195. The most expensive was the 195 at $40. The Aristocrat was $26 and the rest were less expensive still. All were in very good to excellent shape when I bought them and remain so today (I tend to clean frequently). For me, they all provide excellent shaves and I don't find myself interested in new razors as the two I already own give me anything I might want in a razor that works well for me. I'd rather spend money these days on soaps and creams.

Saving through Spending
The fatboy doesn't do anything for me, I could get fine shaves with it but it just wasn't for me. I sold it to a friend who seems to be enjoying it.
