Why so many guys are turned off by straight razors

I can pull off a 2 pass straight razor shave in a minute or 3 more than a de shave. Stroping takes maybe 1 minute. Drying takes seconds. I use mine at least 2x a week so oiling isn’t needed.

Best shaves of my life all the time - no but they’re getting there and my skin has never been happier on my sensitive spots. I’m sold.

My big turn off has the been the maintenance in the past. Now it’s one of the parts of SR Shaving I really enjoy. Go figure

I think I would learn a lot from your experience as you seem to have taken it up fairly recently...and if I remember your wolfman posts,
you're more into slightly milder gaps like 1.05 for daily use.

The one thing I want to stay away from is approaching this like a beginner....starting with a safer round point, then moving up the chain
to more challenging points and grinds....thats just a recipe for buying more and more straights. I want to jump in at the deep end and if
necessary, I'll pay the price in blood if Im not careful).

Would you say you're more of a 1/2 hollow or full hollow kinda shaver? And what sort of blade point did you feel most comfortable with?

I was thinking of trying a 7/8 width but these point designs have me a bit confused.

7/8 is a great size. I have 1/2 and 1/4 hollows in artisan made razors and full hollows in crappy gold dollars and prefer the half hollow so far. The end is personal preference on looks. All SR makers can mute the tip so it’s not so sharp.

I prefer the bigger blades. My next razor will be an 8/8

I have a couple 6/8 GD’s that are honing practice razors but otherwise my 2 nice artisan blades are 7/8 while Mr. Max is currently hammering on a 8/8 for me as we speak.

I was just down at Max’s house dropping off my vintage for a regrind and hone.

The man’s work is unreal. Beautiful razors!!

With a silicon impregnated sock you don’t even have to worry about drying it all that well, let alone oiling which IME is more trouble than good.

I'm not turned off by straight razors. I am turned off by the prospect of slicing off half my face, having it fall into the sink in a bloody mess, and then dying from blood loss.

Seriously, I am not turned off by straight razors, I am just not inclined to spend the time right now to learn to use one. Besides, I already get great, dirt cheap shaves from a safety razor. Perhaps later when I have more spare time, I will try a straight. It would be pretty cool.

Maintenance for me is the biggest turn off. I like how easily I can just swap in a new DE blade when needed.

+2, and I get an extremely close shave with DEs, in less time.

I used to think the same thing for many years until i put in a bit of of practice.
Now i get a smoother more satisfying shave from a straight.
However, i still use my slim and my single edge and enjoy all forms of shaving
