The most despised user on wetshaving forums.

Ok so I have been watching and reading this thread for a while now ans suspect my single post in it will go largely un-noticed. And that would be fine by me.

I almost bailed from B&B after they chased Rod out of town. I hung around a bit longer. Then I noticed the mods were changing the name of Stirling to Stlrling in the headings to prevent the thread from showing up in www searches. When I started pointing out that I noticed what they were doing I was banned from the soap forum, but not the rest of the site. After a bit I asked for my reinstatement and, not only could they tell me who banned me, but they only surmised it was from my vulgar and language. This of course was patently false but had to placate them to atleast participate in the forum. Then came Panjo, and I decided I didnt want to indulge in their gentlemanly (read profit driven) site as an active member. Thats the hook. Free membership, but you have to pay to play in their domain. Speaking of domain, I did my own research on the Joel and B&B and was quite surprised by what I found.
When I jumped into TSN, it was a refreshing feeling. warm acceptance and my favorite vendor was there almost every other day, interacting with users of his product. Then poof, he was gone. No, to read through TSN it is almost like wading through a river of floating corpses. Every other person has been banned. I get why they dont publicly announce why a member was banned. It would be hard for them to justify their actions against an overwhelming majority of their users. When their purge started, there was a post by a mod that explained that members of TSN were responsible for their actions within, AND outside of the forum. Meaning, go to B&B or to DFS and badmouth their forum, expect to get banned. I thought about that for a while. Can you imagine the extra work required to browse forums for users of your forum to see if they express an unfavorable view of your forum, then flip back to TSN and ban them? I suspect that is what has driven the purge from TSN. JMO and all that.
I am so very tempted to unload all of my grievances about both sites here. It seems like a safe enough place to do so, but I see this as more of a test. My membership to the above sites are active at the time of this posting, so we shall see if they will be for much longer. I do notice some heavy hitter profiles arriving here whose accounts are still active on TSN. If my above theory were true, then they should be banned. But they arent. I would suspect that banning these stalwarts of TSN would reduce the site to a shell of its former self. And to those stalwarts, I raise my Coors Light to toast you. ('cause I aint gentlemanly)

Andrew, you are doing something very special here and I applaud your efforts. I honestly dont know how much longer you can keep it up. I hope the strain of BST, moderation, and freedom of speech of your users can be maintained at this level. It seems that most buckle under the weight and are forced to implement rules to justify a heavy hand. Keep up the good work bro.

To the OP, and a side story. I am a member of a very specific car/engine forum. We had a newish member start posting claims of working in/on Holman-Moody NASCAR and NHRA nitro fed blower topped cammers. His posts were 1500-2000 words of grandiose claims. All written is disjointed bullet statements that usually ended with question marks or ... All the famous drivers and tuners were long dead. Through the process of elimination the forum found his real identity and proved he was the grand old age of 9 years old when some of the best nitro cammers were running in So-Cal. Not a single person, live or dead could vouch for him or his stories. Turns out he is just the brother of a care taker of a rich man's car collection. And an enormous pathological liar. He was banned. Forum dissent went from a civil war to actual normalcy. It was his bending of the true history of Ford motorsports that inflamed everyone. Someone who didnt live through those yrs would never know truth from lie based on his rambling falsehoods. Collectively, the users of the forum wanted pure facts, and to perpetuate those facts. Not live in a delusional world that only happened in one man's mind.

I get bad mileage, so yours may vary.

as someone who has in-depth knowledge of that forum you mentioned above, there's serious paranoia and shill-hunting by a few of the admin/mods on that site. I'll bet money there's at least one thread in their mod section on the 1st page discussing this exact topic.

the good thing about this site is I have absolutely 0 reasons to bother trying to find 'shills' or become paranoid about some user(s) or merchant(s). our forum rules make the whole idea of shilling unnecessary - we allow people to openly discuss old/new/future products in the shaving world and we're perfectly fine with merchants being active on the site...in fact, I think I can speak for the rest of the mod team when I say that we enjoy it!

I agree with Andrew in that the interaction our members have with our merchants, who are regular members themselves, makes DFS an extraordinary wet shaving site.

This is such an outstanding statement it would have been a great closerBig Grin

Well said. I like the interaction and the fact merchants have something vested on the site. Very cool and my hat is off to you gents!

Edit: Never mind, I misread and hence gave an inaccurate and incorrect response to the above sentence. Apols to all who were offended.

I saw the same type of nonsense years ago, but did not stick around.

Quote:Then I noticed the mods were changing the name of Stirling to Stlrling in the headings to prevent the thread from showing up in www searches.
Now that's just childish and petty, and certainly not gentlemanly.

Quote:After a bit I asked for my reinstatement and, ...

After you and others had been treated that way, why on earth would you want to stick around?

Quote:When I jumped into TSN, it was a refreshing feeling. warm acceptance and my favorite vendor was there almost every other day, interacting with users of his product.
Then why not make this your online wetshaving home instead?

Quote:No, to read through TSN it is almost like wading through a river of floating corpses. Every other person has been banned.
Ok, so the owner of TSN shot himself in the foot. Again, if the place is that clustered, why stick around?

Quote:I am so very tempted to unload all of my grievances about both sites here.
I mean yeah, you could, but are you really going to get that upset over a couple of forums? There really is a lot more to life, and badly run forums are really insignificant in the overall scheme of things. What you are seeing is not unusual. Many special interests have one or two large, dominant forums that frost a lot of people's behinds, along with smaller alternative forums where the skies are not cloudy all day. Head-fi vs. Changstar in the audio world, Fountain Pen Network vs. FP Geeks, The Fountain Pen Board and Pentrace in the pen universe, and B&B and TSN vs. Damn Fine Shave in the shaving world.

And...? It's not like some people don't bs like crazy on forums. It's is the nature of the beast, even if it is annoying. Just tell him you are Don Garlits and you know for a fact he is full of it. Wink

I am not trying to trivialize your concerns, and think that some of the misbehavior on wetshaving forums is a problem. That isn't going to change the owners' behavior at those places, though. Better to adopt the dog's philosophy: If you can't eat it or mate with it, then piss on it and walk away. It sure beats stewing over it and being ticked off. Life is too short for that,
