Artisans are just people . There's good people and bad people likewise there's bad artisans and good artisans. I don't get why some of you rush to defend random artisans like I'm condemning and slandering all artisans. They'll just soap makers not the chosen ones.

I enjoy shaving but I'm not into brand or artisan worship. Same thing happens with any industry I guess be it glock fan boys or Pc elitists.

Just to be Clear I'm not saying all or most artisans are like this . It seems some are and I was just wanting to converse about why they are.

The only drama between 2+ artisans I've witnessed ended a couple years ago. Not to say the issues have been resolved... but I haven't seen anything publicly for awhile.

Again, how are we supposed to discuss why an artisan talks smack about another without knowing the specifics of the situation?? That's like seeing two people on the street obviously arguing and asking your buddy, "Hey, why are those people screaming at each other?" without having any inkling of what happened between them. Your buddy's only response can be "I don't know". You see how its a pointless question? Or are you asking us to discuss the psychology behind why people get into arguments?? Orrrr, were you aiming to start another one of these threads that eventually devolve into semantic bickering and end up being closed by the mods?

I didnt see anyone defending any artisans here, namely because no artisans have been specifically named, other than the off-hand accusation against PAA, which is always expected.

I think [people are quick to discount the idea that this was something done publicly by an artisan with malicious intent simply because an accusation was made with no proffering of evidence to support said accusation.

Certainly when that happens, there are many that will be quick to jump on the guilty bandwagon, and many more that will be quick to jump on the "I call BS" bandwagon.

Such is the nature of presenting accusations without factual evidence to support said accusations...

C'est la vie...

So your real question is why do some commercial entities do Negative Advertising? That is what you are asking.

American commerce is replete with negative advertising. It works because people remember the negatives. They don't remember the positives. Google it. Here are two items to read.

http://adage.com/article/adage-encyclope...ing/98793/
http://adage.com/article/agency-viewpoin...nd/295692/

And here is a very famous negative ad naming names. Why is it famous? Because human REMEMBER negatives. It works. It happens all the time

Is this the conversation you want to have?

It works. That's why.

Entire careers are built on this ability. Look at the current state of politics. Regardless of your party of choice, both sides seem content to sling mud rather than discuss issues and potential resolutions.

Slinging mud works because humans are subconsciously attracted to drama. That is why we have words and cliches such as mudslinging, rubbernecking, eavesdropping, and gossiping. People love to dish the dirt, stir the feces, and air the dirty laundry. Reality TV shows are a prime example of this.

Why would anyone expect artisans in the shaving hobby/industry to be any different?

I'd rather not reveal the name because I just checked their site and the comment is no longer there. It was a remark about other soap makers in general having inferior products, but there was more to it than that. I can't recall how it was worded exactly but I know it bothered me enough to empty my cart and send them a message. Fwiw, nobody on here ever talks about this particular brand of soaps anyway. I've seen one for sale in BST once I think, but that's about it.

PAA and HTGAM ?

Bahahaha! omg if douglas smythe did this now... Winter is coming!

I think he is trying to restore his company's rep now and creating good vibes.

On topic:
Never seen an artisan do this too, and honestly it would also turn me off. I don't like that kind of advertising specially in our community where we try our best to conduct ourselves as gentlemanly as possible. It's a small community of enthusiasts, it would certainly leave a bad taste in the mouth for many. Many big corporations are slimeballs so we don't really have much of an expectation for them but artisans are I suppose more personal.

Not saying it couldn't work, controversies often do, but it is certainly a turn off.
