Shave 2 ・ 117 g left ・ $6.00 / shave

Another great shave with Mike’s excellent soap, and another big splash of Captain’s Choice Cat O’ Nine Tails bay rum to keep me warm on this cool and rainy day. This isn’t your grandpa’s bay rum – unless your grandpa was a pirate who sipped turpentine for breakfast. This stuff is bold, intense, and about as subtle as a cannonball through the gut. People say it’s “spicy, deep, and really dark.” That’s a libelous understatement.

And the burn – oh, the burn. It doesn’t just sting and wave goodbye like your run-of-the-mill alcoholic aftershave. It moves in, sets up camp, and starts roasting marshmallows on your cheeks. One brave shaver called it “a spicy warm capsaicin burn,” like splashing a dash of Tabasco sauce on your face and calling it self-care. Cat O’ Nine Tails isn’t for the faint of heart or the quick to wince. Some report the inferno lasts a mere 45 seconds (see Nick Shave's review on YouTube), while for others – like older, sensitive-skinned souls such as myself – it lingers longer, stretching out its warm embrace for a solid couple of minutes. Either way, it’s an experience that far outstrips other aftershaves.

Captain’s Choice tells us where they got the name: “Widely used by the end of the 17th century, the cat was a whip made from heavy rope and used to discipline unruly sailors. A four-foot length was split into its three component strands to produce a two-and-a-half-foot tail.  Each of the three strands were then separated again into three to produce the requisite nine tails. These were knotted at the free ends to prevent fraying, and the handle part was then back-spliced to provide a good handgrip. Once made, the cat was stored in a canvas bag until needed. This is also the origin of the phrase, ‘Let the cat out of the bag,’ which was not something any sailor of yore wanted to hear!”

Finally, let me note that today marks 700 lathers with Phoenix Shaving's Peregrino brush. Everyone was perfect. Looking for a desert island shaving kit? This is it.

I thought $.84 was a pricey shave. How are you at $6?

I paid $12 for this puck of Mike's Lime. I've used it twice. So, that means I'm at $6 per shave right now. The more I use a soap, the cheaper it gets. I use that ratio as my motivation to finish a soap. I have a sneaking suspicion, based on nothing but whimsy, that each of my soaps will expire right about the time they hit $0.30 a shave. (Please note that yesterday I used Mike's Bay Rum. That soap is running at $0.84 / shave right now.)
