Puristic Style v. (Meißner Tremonia) unscented
I really like MT’s hard soaps. Easy to lather, they lay down oodles of cushion and leave my hide feeling grand all day. I also love vetiver in all its smoky-rooty-dirty glory. Seems like a match made in heaven, but alas, MT doesn’t offer a vetiver scent. What to do? I ordered a puck of MT’s Puristic Style, one of their unscented soaps. I shredded it fine and then doused it with a couple grams of Javan vetiver oil. This stuff is bitter and dark and ashen all at once, as true vetiver should be. Just for good measure I added a gram or two of Musc Koublai Khan, Serge Lutens’ ode to feral virility. Then I mashed the mess into a jar and let it settle for a few days. This morning when I cracked it open I was surprised and maybe a little dismayed to discover a very civilized vetiver, smooth, mild, and easy on the nose. In fact, it smells a lot like Mike’s Vetiver down to the nutty side note. Khan, though, seems to have headed back to the steppes. No trace of him whatsoever in the puck or in the lather.
