What fragrance are you wearing today?

A nice, deep, dark scent. Some heavy clouds building up over the mountains, but still sunny over the valley. Exactly how this fragrance would look if aroma was visible...bright overhead with a dark backdrop...

Dunhill EdT. This, I believe, is the oiginal (in the brown box) and I have always enjoyed it. Dunhill makes others and they are dreadful to me because they use that chemical that I hate and that makes every modern EdT smell dollar store cheap and the same.

Guerlain Vetiver. NeoXerxes, CHSeifert, and onethinline, I have used a fair amount of this and want to replace it when I run out, which may not be for a while.  However, I have the striped bottle that I picked up in Milan, Italy several years ago and I understand that there is a more modern version that some do not like as much.  Is this true?  Does the newer version use that stuff that's used in Dior Sauvage (G-d forbid!)?  If it does, is there a place that might sell the older version?

I don't smell the Sauvage synthetics in the new Guerlain Vetiver, but to me it smells noticeably different (and not as nice) compared with the ribbed version. There are still a few ribbed versions on eBay - be cautious, but that's probably your best bet. I got mine off of a fellow fragrance enthusiast on eBay.

I haven't spent time with the ribbed-bottle version, but I have the current version and like it quite a bit. No, it has none of the cliché aroma-chemicals you'd find at the Macy's counter, so fear not. It smells of vetiver, tobacco, and a bit of citrus: very natural overall. In fact, to me it smells classic and a bit old-world, in a good way. It may not be the same as the ribbed version, but it's great, in my opinion.

I remember a discussion (perhaps on Basenotes?) a few years back about these different formulations, and the general impression was that it's the ribbed version which was more an outlier in the Guerlain Vetiver lineage, adding more citrus and brightness, whereas the current version is closer to versions before the ribbed bottle. But if you've become accustomed to the ribbed version and love it, I can see why you'd want to stay close to that.

In any event, I can assure you that the new version is still refined and classy, no big woody-ambers or dihydromyrcenol to be found. :-)

Freddy, if you want a more creamy version, get the Guerlain Vetiver Extreme !
But I love all the Guerlain Vetiver versions. They are very affordable and classy smelling.
