This is what people misunderstand about hitech cartridge.
https://knifesteelnerds.com/2021/01/11/w...s-to-dull/

As for brush and skin, razor too needs a Kneipp treatment:
• warm water, to clean the soap
• cold water, to clean the limestone

So this new Gillette how does it compare to the Fusion 5 in your opinion, ischiapp ?

When I started using the Mach 3 and later on the Fusion 5, back in early 1990 and up until 2010, I got perhaps 4-6 good shaves from the same cartridge (whether it was Mach 3 or Fusion 5)

Then I started on the wet shaving forums in 2010 and began using DE razors and started to learn to make proper face mapping, use a brush, using better quality shaving soaps and learned to create a stable moist lather and once in a while went back to my Fusion 5 and got better and better shaves from it.

It’s as though it’s either or when people compare DE shaving to cartridge shaving. For me I use the exact same preparation when I DE shave as when I cartridge shave now and my preference is still slightly towards the Fusion 5, unless I’m shaving daily where I prefer a medium mild DE razor.

In 2014-2015 I began stropping the Fusion 5 and Mach 3 cartridges on my thumb before, during and after my shaves and I got immediate better results.
I also began using my DE razor technique on my cartridge shavers and got better and better shaves.

I can now get 25-35 great shaves from the same Fusion 5 cartridge (I prefer the old orange Fusion 5)

Currently I’m using my Fusion 5 for the first pass with a bit of blade buffing and J-hooking and then a DE razor for the final pass plus touch ups also using a bit of blade buffing with the DE razor.
This combo shaves me totally BBS with very very little to no irritation at all.

The Fusion is one of the best cartridge. I know it very well.
This new Gillette Labs is just a couple of weeks I'm using.
First different I can feel, It's efficiency.
A little closer, but way smoother.
Normally, having a bad chronic dermatitis, after the first 7-10 days the Fusion ProGlide leaves me some issues.
So I need to add preshave and postshave treatment ... or change to a classic razor.
For now (but It's early!!), this one not yet.

BTW, of the Fusion line I much more prefer the handles.
And the option to use different cartridges on them.
My fav is the SkinGuard, on SilverTouch (Power with FlexBall).

I've got the F5, but never used.
I'm still trying to kill the very first Fusion ProGlide I had with the razor in 2013.
It's more than 10yrs that I cyclically reopen my Provember challenge.
But after more than 400 shaves, It's still alive.
Just killed 2 Power handles.
Here some details.

Hi Danlaw,

I'm not that active in the fragrance game any longer.

I still use fragrances daily, but I've stopped buying them and I'm working on using my large collection up before they potentially could turn bad.

So I'm not posting that much about fragrances any more - I've lost the interest in fragrances quite a bit.

Don't get me wrong - I'll always be a fragrance head, but I'm tired of overhyped overpriced niche fragrances to be honest.

They - for the most part - are not worth it to me any longer.
Many of the niche fragrances are either copies of older classics or they try to be more than they really are.

Of course there are beautiful high quality niche fragrances out there, but there are too many clone like niche fragrances with too weird scents in my opinion.

I still own 250+ full bottles, that I'm working on using up as fast as I can - willl probably take me a decade.
When I run out of fragrances, I'll buy 20-25 high quality fragraces from Chanel, Dior, Hermes, Givenchy and Guerlain - and stop there.

Regarding thumb stropping a blade - take your Cartridge razor and run your thumb across the blade from the top blade to the end blade as if you would clean the blade with your thumb.

Of course you run your thumb with the grain of the blades and not against them, unless you would like to cut your thumb open LOL
You can also thumb strop a DE blade the same way.

Thumb stropping helps clean the blade's edge, removing water stains and removing microscopic metal from the blade.

For sure.

I use a strategy to extend the life of the cartridge:
• sunflower oil bath, for resting storage between shaves
• hot washing, before shaving to remove the protective oil cover
• Kneipp treatment, after each use (see my previous post)
• blade maintenance, with 20 passes on leather strop
• bath oil again

With this method the durability results are incredible.

Hi Isciapp,

I think we're on to something here.

Since i started thumb stropping my Fusion 5 and Mach 3 cartridges in 2014/2015 I've managed to get 25-35 great shaves out of the same cartridge.

I could probably get even more ou of it if I used a leather strop like you do.

Regarding the handles on the cartridge razoors I use.

I dislike the plastic Gillette handles.

I use aftermarket Fusion 5 and Mach 3 handles from Plisson, Edwin Jagger, Mühle and Wild & Harte.
