What can you tell me about OLEO

Getting ready to place my annual once a year 400 dollar order from Maggards... I find it’s still excessive in product after all these years but cheaper if I say 400 one time and that’s it for the year....

Noticed a brand on there that wasn’t around last year... OLEO... anyone have their stuff? Any good? Specifically the aftershave? I have become pretty loyal to my soap maker favorites over the years and they still have plenty of scent profiles I haven’t tried so I am curious as to the aftershave here more than the soap...

I like Oleo duck fat soap. Great performer. The aftershave is nothing more than scented alcohol though. Not great. They supposedly have a new formula with added "skin food". I haven't tried that one yet.

Sometimes in that price range you find an all day winner... guess I will steer clear... apparently this is not one such bargain.. thanks for the info

I have a special edition aftershave of theirs, and the great scent (“Dapper Man”) lasts quite a long time. However, that’s the only Oleo Soapworks aftershave I’ve ever used, so I’m not sure how the others are.

Though aftershaves by the same maker may have similar properties otherwise, the strength and longevity of the scents can vary wildly, which is why I don’t buy as many aftershaves as I used to. However, if I know that an aftershave has ingredients that will benefit the skin, the scent becomes more of an added bonus. At least some of Oleo’s aftershaves have ingredients like allantoin, tea tree oil, and witch hazel, which immediately makes them more appealing to me than just a plain alcohol + fragrance splash.

Someone was having a sale on Oleo aftershave products awhile ago so I now have 5 Oleo scents (Jacmel, Rush Street, New City, Isidro, and Sandalumo). Matsilainen is right on the varying longevity. If you want something that doesn't last long, pick up Jacmel or Isidro. Both of these have a heavy "alcohol" scent off the bottle and neither last me more than a half hour. Rush Street and New City are really nice scents and don't smell like alcohol as much (the alcohol scent is still there, just not as much) and the scent will last for about an hour.

Personally, I really love the Sandalumo. Again, there is an alcohol scent present but it is on the lighter side as compared to Jacmel/Isidro. But I will pick up the Sandalumo scent for a few hours after application. The scent is in the "smokey" genre so if you're not a fan of the smoke-scents, it may not be for you. It's not a strong smoke-scent like Stirlings Texas on Fire and the sandalwood helps tone down the smoke-scent.

I tend to agree with wyze0ne on the performance...it's nothing spectacular although I'm glad to read they're coming out with a new "skin-food" formula.

Oleo's Canard (duck fat) base is excellent. Personally I find their scents to be just OK. Sort of inoffensive melanges. I know scent is subjective but I constantly find there to be little to no similarity between the scent profile online and the scent off the puck. Of the scents I see currently on Maggard I like Shilo the best. A bright lemony scent. I also like Rougere even though I don't think it smells like the description. El Cabelero is pretty nice too and the bonus there is that your wife might want to use it too. Kind of a gender neutral scent. If you see their Bonaire, its the same scent as Stirling's Island Man.

I don't see it on Maggard but my surprise soap of 2019 is Murphy and McNeil, they've got excellent bases that I've tried in both beef and duck tallow.

M&M is coming to Maggard soon from what I hear.

People rave about the soap, but I would say it is just above average. I would go Wholly Kaw of PAA CK6 if you are buying soap. Just my humble opinion though.

Going to have to agree with EFDan here. I’ve also been really into Ariana and Evans / The Club products. I really enjoy their soap base and skin food aftershave. Performance is absolutely outstanding and post shave is up there with talbot shaving and grooming dept. scents are fantastic as well. Good scent strength.

So I really like Oleo. I don't use their AS because I don't think it compares to the best of the best.

The soap on the other hand is amazing for me. It is a harder soap that will make a high structure lather, so if you prefer soft soaps and low structure lather (examples are DG Bison, BM Reserve, WK Donkey Milk), then I may recommend skipping it.

For me, the canard base is my best performing soap. Lathers very easily, makes the slickest lather in my den and gives me the perfect post shave (not too greasy or dry). Scents are Oleos Achilles heel though. I really enjoy Don Luis, JacMel and El Caballero. I find other scents too artificial and cologne-like and one scent gave me a pretty intense burn (Providence).

With Oleo, I always recommend buying samples first to test for scent and skin compatibility. WCS sells the samples and they are well worth buying.

Vida (the owner) has been talking on her IG account that she is trying to get away from fragrance oils and instead blend EOs for all products down the road.

Another good artisan in the high structure genre of soap is APR, particularly the older formula. That is another stunner.
