i think it's going to depend on where you plan to get any from.

most vendors (and groomingdept.com) seem to say "sold out" for all of them.

ps: What's that brass gadget on the top shelf? a model steam locomotive?

With few exceptions, Mohammad tends to make specific scents only in a specific formulation. He is always coming out with new formulations and new scents to go along with them. I do not expect that to change. Thus, if you want a formulation of scent not currently in production, you might need to purchase it "pre-owned".

The most recent release was Mallard, which is a wonderful formulation. All of the soaps on the groomingdept.com web site are sold out. I understand there may be some Mallard soaps on the way to the stockists who carry Grooming Dept soaps, but I have not seen any in stock. The Mallard scents are all gourmand type scents.

The soap formulations that are actively being produced are: Kairos, Mallard, Nai (vegan), and Fortis. Fortis is designed to be a less expensive soap for those who hesitate to pay the price of the premium soaps. However, the performance is not up to the standards of the other formulations and the scents are not as refined.

I have some older Grooming Dept soaps that I really like along with some newer ones in Nai and Kairos. Of the older ones, Sandalwood Fig Musk, Incense & Rose, After The Fire and Mallard Kulfi all stand out. I see the Mallard Kulfi scent has been repeated in the newest Mallard base. I used the Incense & Rose (beef tallow) today and it was most excellent.

In an email communication I had with Mo, in response to a question by Mo I suggested that he seek a greater level of consistency with both bases and scents. Lack of consistency (apart from high quality) has been one of the hallmarks of Grooming Dept. The bases are always changing and evolving, though of nearly uniformly high quality. The scents, being a subjective thing, are more problematic. Mo seldom seems to bring them back though, as noted, two or more of the newer mallard offerings have the same names as some older offerings and are likely a repeat of the older scents. This therefore may be evolving.

Personally, I like being able to order a fresh tub in a new base with a scent I have grown fond of. Good examples of companies that use this approach are Declaration Grooming and Barrister & Mann. This is my preferred approach. Wholly Kaw appears to have chosen a completely different approach. They keep existing scents available in the base in which the scent was introduced but do not appear to migrate that older scent to the newer base.

A separate paradigm is where the soapmaker produces a soap with a scent created by a scentmaker like Chatillon Lux or Maol Grooming. One of my favorite soap scents of all time is Chatillon Lux's Yuzu Rose Patchouli. At least 3 different soapmakers have utilized that particular scent with Declaration Grooming currently offering it in Milksteak. Grooming Dept has used Maol Grooming's FrankinLime successfully and Talbot has also used that scent albeit with a less satisfying result IMO.

If Mohammad updates an existing soap formulation like Mallard, he might reissue some of the previous scents in the updated formula. However, if he produces a new formulation entirely, it is likely to have new scents to go along with it.

Some artisans tend to maintain their old scents even though the soap formula may have been updated. Barrister and Mann is one who has done this. Seville, for example, was sold in Glissant and Excelsior bases and is now being produced in Omnibus. The problem with that is that if there is any older stock on the shelves at one of the vendors, things can get confusing for both buyer and seller.

When Declaration Grooming came out with the Milksteak base, Scott planned to keep many of the popular scents and issue some new ones as well. However, to prevent confusion, he slashed the prices of the previous soap bases to clear out inventory.

I'd say that is a pretty good list. The only one I haven't tried is Aion. I had a superb shave with Valencia in the Kairos base today.
