Another thing to try is a few drops of peroxide in the ear canal. Just lie on your side and let the peroxide sit in the ear for 5-10 minutes. The bubbling will help keep the ear clean which helps the Eustachian tubes. When I does this while congested I can feel that side nostril clear and then the other clears when I do the other side. I perform it again when my nose starts to feel stuffy again.

I'm pretty sure Eucalyptus is the main active ingredient in VapoRub, so that makes sense. My ENT once told me that if he could just get people to drink enough water, he'd never have to recommend decongestants again, so don't forget to hydrate too.

My mom used to rub vicks on our chests when we were sick as kids. We did it with our kids too and its amazing how it calms them as well as their coughing. Honestly, I still like it when my wife rubs it on my chest when I'm sick. Yup, I'm just a big kid. Pam, call my mom...

ShadowsDad, do you know if prolonged use of eucalyptus oil will have an effect on the skin? I was just wondering. (Those of us with congestion issues often have sensitive skin around the nose area.)

bakerbarber, I have felt nasal irrigation make a noticeable difference, but have read of those awful horror stories of viruses from contaminated tap water… I currently use store-bought distilled water in the hopes that it is fully clean.

I agree with Freddy — it’s nice to discuss and learn something a little different here on DFS. And it’s good to have such a large group of people for advice and feedback on a variety of matters.

I don't know Matthew.

I was discussing it with a friend who knows more about herbs and EOs than I do today and she made the comment about applying it to the skin of the nose, "If one can tolerate it.". The directions on the bottle I have says to dilute it a bit. But one could always use Vicks. It's camphorous and already diluted into a petroleum jelly base.

Thanks, Brian. I guess one way to find out is to just try. Smile The dilution might help lessen any negative effects on the skin. My first thought would be to use some vegetable glycerin or aloe vera gel along with the oil.

Brian, I would strongly recommend diluting the eucalyptus essential oil before putting it directly on your skin, let alone your nostril. Just my take if you choose not to find a way to put it on your upper chest or clothes.

Just a note though. If you want a link to a nice Eucalyptus, PM. E radiata is a bit more calm and mild vs E globulus has more of the camphorous and menthol like feeling. Globulus is great for muscle relief and breathing that full fresh air. I use the radiata for the blended oils concoctions.
