I'm thinking no nerves, ligaments, tendons, etc.... were severed as I think the doc would have figured that out. You have a solid plan moving forward so it won't happen again.

Damn dude that sucks! Few things piss me off more than hurting myself doing something like that. I hope it heals up quick for you. Stitches are not fun.

BadDad--Where on the finger is the cut? Palm side or opposite?  What segment of the finger?  Do all the joints move normally as they did before?  When the local anesthetic wears off do you have normal sensation in the finger tip?  I am an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in the hand. Innocent looking cuts can also result in laceration of deeper structures. I have seen many injuries missed in the ED. Please feel free to PM me if you want to discuss.

The cut is right above the middle knuckle on the back side. The deepest part of the cut is midway between the small and medium knuckles. Everything bends as it should, and sensation was strong at the tip before Novacaine, and after. Actually it's throbbing pretty good as I type this all the way up. I did make sure the knuckles all bent freely before the stitches were applied.

It's painful, and it's gonna suck for about a week, but it's gonna be OK. I really appreciate your concern, though. Thank you for your questions and offer of advice.

That's the pits! Good thing it wasn't worse, and it definitely could have been.

Have your company get you kevlar gloves with a high friction face. Leather might not be tough enough but kevlar resists cutting. Might also put a divider between you and the metal. One that doesn't reach all the way to the floor so that you can cut the bands and not take the force of the end snapping up. Another glove that might work, and I wouldn't know here to get them... I was a combat engineer in the military. We had ball bearing faced gloves for working with concertina wire and such. No knife edge will ever get through those. Just be sure to not let the edge get to the back of the glove. Today the military uses razor wire, but I bet the gloves are the same.
