An excellent choice. There are 2 types, one with 13 nibs on the comb and one with 17 nibs, which is called the Peerless.

The one in the center is the typical Clog Pruf.



This is my Peerless, and it is a mild yet efficient razor on my face. I hope you find one!

I bought my Clog-Pruf (Peerless model) from ebay. The seller had it listed as an MMOC, so you might search for MicroMatic or MMOC as well. Many times you find the razors with no designation as to what model, so knowing what the different models look like will be helpful in sorting things out. Etsy also has GEM style razors.

Just bought a three-pack containing a flare-tip SS and two GEM razors on the auction site, for a very low price.
I wanted a flare-tip SS too, and one of the GEMs looks like a Bullet-tip, which is possibly a nice choice too.
The other GEM seems in very poor condition, verdigris, rust.
Not sure I’ll be able to use it...

Another term you can search for is MMCP which is a common abbreviation for the Micromatic Clog-Pruf.

The Bullet-Tip (MMBT) also known at the Flying Wing (MMFW) is a good razor. The efficiency levels of the three Micromatic razors go in this order (with the MMOC being the highest in efficiency): MMBT/MMFW, MMCP, then MMOC.

I picked up several GEM/EverReady razors last year as I found them in good condition and at a good price. I had read that the first three shaves with the Personna GEM PTFE-coated Stainless Steel blades can be a little harsh, so you would want to use a milder GEM-style razor for those shaves before using a more efficient razor (if you have one). I found that to be true. I plan to try using the MMBT on the fist few shaves on my next new blade to see how that goes before using my MMCP or MMOC. For my last GEM blade, I used a Blackland Sabre with Level 2 plate for the first three shaves. I bought the Sabre used at a good price. The MMBT is more efficient than the Sabre even with the Level 2 plate (and a fraction of the cost).

I would say to search YouTube on videos on cleaning up/restoring razors. You would be surprised what you can restore to useful condition.

I am still figuring that out. My last Personna GEM PTFE-coated Stainless Steel blade, I quit after 10 shaves but that was before I ran across the thought of using different razors for different stages of the blade's life. So for my current blade, I started with the Sabre (very mild) for the first three shaves, moved to the ER 1924 (Shovelhead), MMCP and MMOC for the next several shaves. I had a little razor burn from shave 8 using the MMOC (probably should have gone with a milder razor starting with shave 8) so I went with the MMCP today for shave 9 and that was excellent. I plan to try the MMCP for D10 and if it starts feeling rough, I will switch to the MMBT (or the Sabre).

I have read other people were able to get 8-12 shaves with that blade. I am sure a lot of it has to deal with how tough your beard is, how good your shave prep and technique are (in addition to which razor you use).

Some people 'palm strop' the new blade to take away from the harshness of the first few shaves. I have never tried it.

I would suggest for your used blades that you take off the aluminum spines of a few of them and keep the spines in case you wind up with a razor for which you want to try shims with. Shims make certain GEM-style razors less harsh as they compensate for modern GEM blades having thinner spines than vintage blades.

The easiest way I have found to remove the spines is to put the cardboard back around the blade (so it covers the cutting edge), hold the spine with a pair of pliers, then wiggle the blade back and forth to loosen it from the spine. You can split the spine for a low shim (but I would sand down the rough edge). You can leave the spine as is for a high shim and you can flatten the spine to get a medium shim. Shims are very helpful for bumpless MMOCs.

Never heard of using shims with GEM razors before.
