Vintage razor for newbie

I actually just inherited my great grandfather's vintage Gillette razor. It probably is from the 60's but i'm unsure of the model. The razor was lost for a while and finally turned up in a bathroom drawer! YAY! And it's shave ready, almost brand new mint condition!

Hello, this is my first post. I really want to get a vintage razor. However, I have no idea how they shave. What is the best vintage for a beginner? I prefer less aggressive razors like EJ de89. Any recommendations or thoughts? Thanks!

I agree with the recommendation of a Gillette DE or a single edge. As far as mildness, the red tip model supposedly is more aggressive than other Gillettes. I haven't tried the red tip but the other Gillettes I've used, e.g., the Fatboy, the Slim Adjustable, the SuperSpeed, the Tech, the open comb, are all mild and wonderful to shave with.  If you're willing to try the road less traveled, the single edge razors like the Star, the Gem, the EverReady are fantastic, but watch a video first to make sure you get the angle right. With most SEs you need to have the blade cover pretty much parallel to your face.

I know the baseplate is on upside down but I hope that doesn't matter! It's about 3/4 of an inch long and it's a Gillette from about the 50-70's

Whatever you end up buying you will need to clean it and sanitize it before you use it.

When you do purchase a used razor. The best way to sanitizer it is to use Barbicide liquid concentrate (make sure you follow the the directions) followed by a good ispropyl alcohol bath and scrub with a tooth brush. You can also use alcohol and vinegar but it is not as sanitary. Good Luck!

Looks like a Gillette Travel Tech(from the description of length). That is a good razor.

The Techs are indeed fine razors - just make sure you flip that baseplate round before shaving!

I would think that the Tech, flair tip, Slim adjustable or Fatboy would be great options.
