Vintage razor for newbie

Hello, this is my first post. I really want to get a vintage razor. However, I have no idea how they shave. What is the best vintage for a beginner? I prefer less aggressive razors like EJ de89. Any recommendations or thoughts? Thanks!

Believe it or not I have no idea what the EJ89 is like.

In vintage Gillettes possibly the mildest is the Tech. But no Gillette is wildly aggressive. They can only be claimed to be aggressive as compared to other Gillettes IMO. A black handled Gillette Superspeed would be low mid aggressive as would one from the 50s.

If you want an adjustable, and it's not a bad way to go at all, the Gillette Slim in either handle length is a good one and shouldn't break the bank. It'll give a good mild shave set to 1 but can go all the way up to magic 9, that is, wide open, and it's a good training razor for more aggressive razors. Of course it can be dialed to any setting in between as well. The Superspeeds I mentioned would be about a 3 setting on the Slim (or Fatboy). That's the best I remember it, it's been awhile since I used a Gillette adjustable.

Then there are the SE (single edge) safety razors. The mildest of these are the GEM Contour, Featherweight, and another whose name escapes me at the moment. The Featherweight is quite common and inexpensive and IMO the shave is better than a DE razor. You owe it to yourself to try a SE.

If you can find a STAR DE from the early 50s, they are mild but can offer up a smooth close shave.

Gillette super speed, you can't go wrong, its mild yet gives you a super close shave.

I would try a Gillette Slim Adjustable. It is a wonderful razor with which to start and allows you to adjust the blade exposure for when you want to get a slightly more aggressive shave. They are not too expensive in very good condition.

yep. $20 for one in good shape on ebay or in the bst section.

Whatever you end up buying you will need to clean it and sanitize it before you use it.

Can't go wrong with a Gillette Tech.
They are mild razors but pair it with something like a feather blade and you will achieve great results.

I actually just inherited my great grandfather's vintage Gillette razor. It probably is from the 60's but i'm unsure of the model. The razor was lost for a while and finally turned up in a bathroom drawer! YAY! And it's shave ready, almost brand new mint condition!
