Turning of the Larch - Fall in my backyard

OK, its a 30 minute drive from my backyard.  Its been a beautiful fall this year.

This one is not in my backyard but rather, is the view from a good friend's deck in West Vancouver.  Not too shabby.  He sent me that picture as a gloat in response to the picture I sent him of my yard under a foot of snow.  In September.  People from the west coast are cruel.

Beautiful photos, Mark. Funny, but my friends in the East and Midwest of the States think I'm cruel, too, simply  because of where I live. I just don't understand.

You will never hear that from me Freddy! I may gripe toward the end of winter when I've had more than enough, but I actually enjoy the change of seasons and our extremes. I have no idea where you reside, but I have yet to hear of the place I'd rather be other than Maine. Every place else is too hot in the summer or way too wet. I hate the heat; I've had far too much of it. I can always throw more layers on or put another log on the fire and pour another scotch.

I live in San Diego, California, Brian, and the weather is just right for me.  I hate extremes of temperature and San Diego, on average, doesn't have them (though there are exceptions, of course, because Mother Nature may be beautiful but she can be quite fickle ).  Also, as much as I enjoy visiting the country, I am a big city boy and would go absolutely stir crazy living in a suburb, small town, or village.  I can, and do, drive but I am much happier taking the bus or light rail to get around and do it often.  On the other hand, if I look out my window, I'm sure as heck not going to be seeing any guinea fowl going by.  Pooping pigeons, yes; guinea fowl, no. Different strtokes and all that.

Yeah, you'd go nuts where I live then. The silence can be deafening at times and entertainment are similar to watching the guinea fowl or shooting. I couldn't live in a city today; I'd go nuts. After 24 hours in the state I lived in 30+ years ago (20 miles outside NYC; NJ) I'm doing anything I can to leave and get back to the pines. To me a tolerable city, and for just a day trip, is Portland Maine and to most folks it's not a city at all. It's certainly not San Diego or NYC.

I agree, we couldn't be more different. City mice vs country mice, it's always been that way.

We took a couple from NYC camping with us when we lived in NJ, up to the Beaverkill in NY state. We couldn't understand how they could exist without driving licenses, and they were clearly out of their element on the river and in the forest. Same as we would be in NYC where they would be at home and comfortable.

I live in southern Alberta which is in Western Canada just east of the Rockies.  We get all four seasons here, sometimes in one day!  I tell folks about the weather that its not what you get but when you get it that can sometimes be challenging. Ah, but those glorious 2 weeks of summer when the temperature may hit 70 or even 75 during the day and still drop to 40 or lower overnight.  No heat no humidity. No trouble sleeping here.  I've heard that Maine is beautiful and I've also heard that about San Diego too.  By the way, I love watching the Chargers lose football games - its because of how they treated Doug Flutie and Drew Breeze.  Its a curse like the Toronto Maple Leafs in hockey who treated Frank Mahovalich so badly that he had a nervous breakdown.  He got traded to the Habs (Montreal Canadiens) and went on to win several stanley cups and have a hall of fame career and the Maple Leafs haven't been to a stanley cup final or even a semi final in over 50 years.  Its karma.

Gotta love warm days and cool nights Marko! That's what I love about summer in Maine. It's why we tolerate our winters.

When the temperature drops and the wind comes off of the lake, whispering through the pines, along with the call of the loon. It's just an unbelievable thing. Throw another chunk of wood on the campfire and everything is just as right as can be for the moment. :-) A neat scotch helps too.

(No I don't live on a lake, but a friend does.)

Brian, that sounds like my kind of place. I like the woods and the mountains and the solitude. Hustle and bustle of city life? don't want it but obviously there's plenty of folks who love it. YMMV
