I think that's the essence of DFS. Between the excellent Mods that maintain the respectful tone without big footing and the excellent members that accept that we can disagree, even passionately, while still being respectful of the opinions and perspectives of other members. I think it would be a really boring forum if everyone held the same views and opinions as me I'm learning tons on DFS - I'll be trying BadDad 's williams puck and Nivea cream super lather - no more walking by that cheap Williams puck on the bottom shelf at the supermarket. And Barrister_N_Mann 's budget cream recommendations are great - presented in that very detailed and useful manner that Will is so good at.

It is a good thread. Slight sidetrack: It's exactly this type of thread and me making VERY similar cost comparisons vis-a-vis soaps that almost got me banned on another site. What a difference on DFS.

My top budget choice when I consider cost and performance is Stirling. I think it performs as well as many of the higher priced soaps but comes with a less expensive price tag. In addition, you know you're buying from quality folks and that's certainly a bonus.

Budget soap? Well...
- La Toja. It costs around €1,50 around here. Great performance and I enjoy the scent.
- Wilkinson shaving stick. Another good performance soap. Around €2,50 also around here.
- Haslinger soaps. For only €4-€6, you have fantastic price per value here.
- Palmolive Classic and Nivea. Around €2 at every supermarket. Also Lavanda or Veleiro, between €3-€4.
- Real Shaving Company shaving creams. Lovely performance, on pair with some high-end creams, and great price.

Someone mentioned that the average cost is about $15 or under $4/oz. If we ignore the cost/shave factor, then a budget item cannot be in the $15 range, more likely the $10 and under range or $2.50/oz.

Based on this criteria, then IMO its

1. Mystic Water. Nothing else even comes close in the under $2.50 range. Its so good, it competes near the top tier stuff at triple the price. And the huge variety of available scents just adds to the equation. If you can't find a scent you like among the Mystic Water range, well maybe it doesn't exist.

2. Mikes Natural. Just a touch less quality than Mystic Water based upon after shave feel. Good stuff, also competing with the big boys.

3. Soap Commander, hitting the $2.50/oz ceiling. I'm not enamored by the names which make no sense to me, and a bit down from the other two in technical performance, but still good stuff. On the other hand, their After Shave Balms are just excellent.


From there, its a slippery slope I just don't see some of the other soaps anywhere near the quality of the first two (i.e., Mystic and Mikes).

However, I completely understand the need and desire to use what is cost effective. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Put me in the camp with grim , Mystic Water Soap, Mike's Natural Soaps, and Soap Commander!

On a side note, I just received my first tub of Barrister & Mann, the Unscented version. I found the label slogan made me laugh out loud: "Made with Awesome. Tested on People."

Good picks and I like Mystic Water too however, I do not agree that nothing comes close at that price point. Of course it's all subjective and ymmy but for me Stirling is every bit as good and it's easier to lather. With an average price of $2.15 to $2.30 per ounce for 5.8oz tubs and $2 per ounce average for 4.5oz refill pucks, just as many scents, excellent customer service, low $4 flat rate shipping, and B&M White Label performacne, it's really hard to beat. Again, I like MW and I don't have problems lathering it, but it is a finicky soap that you have to be patient with when lathering. The slickness and post shave are excellent and the scent that I have smells great so, I agree it is one of the best budget soaps and overall soaps. Now I need to update my picks since I failed to include it.

I think I should add that if one looking at the under the $2.50/oz mark, there are ways to get there or close to it by just searching for sales. I don't want to pay full price. Who does?

A few examples. Trumpers is usually a $30 tub. At the moment, its under $19 on Amazon. Thats $2.68/oz. That's close enough to make the call (possibly) of being budget? We are talking pennies here.

However, the most significant thing to me is catching this stuff on sale, without doubt the best time between Black Friday and New Years. I know people like to buy things year round but I've seen resellers selling things for 25% off, and in one case, everything in the store for 33% off.

33% off is a massive sale to me. Stock up.

I'm sure everyone here knows Perfumunia is giving Tabac away today. $7.49 a refill. Pretty sure you can get free shipping and $10 credit on the next buy just by getting their newsletter. That's $1.70/oz for the first refill and free for the second. Anyone going to pass up on free?
