I keep seeing the Gillette Black Beauty on the SOTD and every time I do I think of the Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum so I'm starting this thread to show and discuss percussion related things. I'm not a percussionist, however, my son is and for years I was both is bankroll and his drum tech so I know a little bit, very little, however I am a huge percussion fan.

Without further ado

For those of you who may think that all snare drums sound alike, here is a video displaying the differences among what the maker considers the 7 best snare drums in the world, plus one honourable mention.

I went with my son to a drum clinic a few years ago given by Steve Smith, the drummer for Journey - dude was awesome, he performed this particular bit at the clinic, this guy is one talented percussionist.

Here's a good video that illustrates the difference between a rock snare drum and a marching snare drum - marching snares generally have kevlar drum heads tuned super tight.

Marching snares also fall apart quicker than one used in  a rock band due to the excessive toque on the drum head

I see a lot of Steve Smith but he is just one in a long line of drummers, so many in fact that I could not name my top five if I took ten years.
Although Charley Watts, Bernard Purdy, Steve Gadd, John Bonham and Jeff Porcaro would have to be in the top somewhere just to name a few off my the top of my head.

You see a lot of Steve Smith because he doesn't appear to have destroyed himself with excess and hard living/partying like so many talented musicians have. He seems as sharp today as he ever was, maybe more so.
