TATARA RAZOR

I have never seen a razor that holds the blade more rigidly.  The top cap comes all the way out to the baseplate laterally and then the hand "engages" the plate.  I am fairly picky and this is a keeper.

Mark, out of curiosity, does this razor hold the blade more rigidly than the Wolfman razors?

In my opinion, it does hold the razor more rigidly than a Wolfman. The head design shares some similarities to Wolfman. Pin design is similar. So is the the cap in the way it pinches the blade against the base plate to the very edge of the cap. The difference, is the way the handle engages the base plate. Similar to the blackbird, the handle fits into the base plate until terminally tight. I surmise that this might make the difference when comparing to the Wolfman. Hope this helps.

Ordered a Masamune OC based on the reviews that I have read; medium-aggressive is the sweet spot for me.

I must commend Joao (one of the partners at Tatara Razors) for his exemplary customer service. Responses have been very timely. He explained that each Masamune is engraved and hand finished only after payment is received, hence some lead time is necessary to get the razor customer-ready and ready-to-ship.

I am excited to test drive this razor when it arrives.

No it locks differently with the blade the look and the feel is totally different of how it shaves. For me I enjoy the Tatara much more than the Wolfman

I agree. It does share some similarity to the Wolfman WR1. The blade is engaged all the way to the end of the cap much like a WR1 and the pin mechanism is similar. However, it appears that the there is more bend in the blade with Masamune. Also, the handle engages the baseplate much like the blackbird.

Overall, it is an excellent razor. I own the SB and am awaiting the OC baseplate. It is an incredibly smooth shaver. I have no regrets.

Interesting! More bend is usually a really good thing for me... not that I have a Wolfman to my name or anything.

Taking the specs stated on their respective sites "as is" without investigating further, the Masamune has slightly negative blade exposure (-0.13mm), while the Wolfman WR1 has neutral blade exposure (less than 0.1mm). Razors with negative blade exposure tend to be more forgiving with regards to pressure (in other words, comparably more pressure is required to engage the blade). I had hoped to compensate for the negative blade exposure by ordering the OC with larger blade gap.

My Masamune shipped yesterday, and I am looking forward to doing a side-by-side comparison.

I have both plates (OC and SB). You will see it probably in a few days in BST section . IMO, nothing special and I still prefer Wolfman´s but I agree they share some visual similarity. It is quite mild razor but to my tastes not efficient enought. Of course YMMV and depends on if you compare it with Feather AS-D2 or Muhle R41 )

Look, razors take the best from previous designs . Wolfman evolved directly from the 1930s Darwin and the 20s New Improved.
