Hello. Can I participate in the pass around please? I have a Karve CB SS which I love but am curious if there are other razors in the same price range that I may like better that I could sell/trade it for if I do. Have heard excellent things about the tatara masamune. Thanks!
I've had the pass around razor for a little over a week now. I am a 2 pass WTG shaver. I can't shave XTG or ATG without getting ingrown hairs. This is one of those razors that took a little time for me to figure out. I used the stock Nodachi handle for the first 2 shaves and the first pass was good, but the second pass was rough. I switched to a Weber Bulldog handle for a couple of shaves and the results were much better. I tried switching back to the Nodachi handle, thinking that I had it figured out, but the second pass was rough again, so I concluded that the long handle just does not work for me. I get a smooth shave with both passes when I use the Weber handle. I have used a Blackbird, Charcoal Goods Level 2 SB, and Carbon for comparison while I've had the Nodachi in my possession. The Nodachi has just a little less blade feel than the Blackbird. It's not as efficient, but I would say it's about the same level of aggression. In comparison to the Charcoal Goods, I would say that it is more efficient and more aggressive. I would say that it is about the same efficiency as the Carbon, but it's a little more aggressive. I have enjoyed using the razor, but not with the stock handle. I think it's a good buy for someone who likes blade feel. I enjoy the blade feel, but it's something I have to be in the mood for. My recommendations to improve the razor would be to have the option for a 75 - 80 mm handle and to maybe increase the diameter of the stand. The handle fits perfectly, but it does rub and I wonder if that will harm the finish over time.
Just as a heads up:
1, this razor is available with the 89mm Masumane handle vs the 105mm Nodachi handle at no additional charge. An added benefit is the Tatara handles lock in the blade for even greater blade precision and feedback vs the aftermarket handles (read write up and view photos for detail).
2, we have trialed Tatara razors for over 18 months using the stand. We too were concerned regarding defacing the handle but to date, there have been zero scratches or polishing
