This is a review of a razor I have been using for two weeks straight now and that I should have bought it long time ago , when many of my friends who tried it recommended it to me.(Oskar and Joe , thanks !)
Truth to be told , I have been very happy with my Muhle Rocca v 3.0 (best razor I have tried in 2018) and the Timor closed comb head (best shaves for 2017) , so when some of my friends told me who great this razor shaves I was kind of “I’m good , thanks”.
However , when I saw the Dark Masamune , it was almost love at first sight.
The Portuguese guys behind this razor have done a great job with its design , mixing some zen minimalism with the Bauhaus school and the result is this Masamune.
Is a beautiful razor indeed , my pics doesn’t make justice at all to its beauty and style , and weights more than you would think when you open the cork box where it comes.
The cork box brings a rustic style with some kind of minimalism too , I really enjoy this presentation.
The handle knurling is more “secure” than I also expected , and it’s very easy to hold while shaving , even with wet hands , like I sometimes do.
I got both of the heads , the open and closed comb , but I must say I have used the closed comb more since I have a medium beard , not to coarse , not too light.
What can I say ? I have tried the closed comb head with Astra Blue blades , Gillette Platinum (my favorite type of blade) , Gillette Silver and Iridium Super and every time I enjoy an extremely pleasant and smooth shave. The closed comb head is for every day use , providing close , almost BBS shaves every time with each of those blades.
For me , that these days I shave every day , is truly a great pleasure to use it.
The open comb head , on the other hand , is more aggressive , you can clearly notice the blade exposure when shaving. Some of my friends with coarser beards love it since is extremely efficient for that. Also if you shave every other day would be a great head.Dont get me wrong , is also smooth , but not as smooth as the closed comb head (for me , of course). It also reminds me of the Barbaros TR1 , but I should try them hand by hand since I haven’t used the Barbaros since 2016.
Also , for what I understand , every razor they make is numbered and I got lucky N 15.
And now , is this my favorite razor these days ? Hard question to answer.I can tell you that I haven’t missed the Muhle Rocca v 3.0 that much these days using the Tatara closed comb.Does it means is the best for me ? Well , means that I’m enjoying it like any other razor right now , and I think I have tried many razors by now.For example I prefer how this razor shaves over the Timeless 0.68 , the LASSC BBS1 , the ATT M1 or R1 , the BlackLand etc.
Well , you guys who recommended me this razor were right and I should have listened back in 2017 , but I’m glad I got it now.Its truly a discovery for me when I have lost interest with most of the current DE or SE razors.
I can only finish this by saying : ¡Viva Portugal! and thanks João and team for this razor.Portuguese pride indeed.
