Despite being a Tatara fan, I was put off this morning by the "We'll tell you why" blurb when the email hit my inbox.  The blurb is all about a piece of Japanese sword making history, and they're not selling a sword or a blade of any sort.  They're selling a razor.  Contrast Tatara's approach with Blackland Razors totally on point approach to engaging users in the design and development of the Osprey and Sabre2 razors.  

Make no mistake though:  I am one of those who are respectfully fascinated by the Japanese history involved, and by the lives, philosophy, and wisdom of both those who made the blades, and those who used them.  I just don't like seeing the glorious history turned into a razor promo.  Just show us what you got, and if you like, fill us in about the design choices and implementation techniques that make the Amakuni something special.

I originally assumed that I would buy the razor, but I am holding off until the DETAILS are released. Fascinating history, but I would have preferred that history to be followed by how it relates to the design of the razor.

Nonetheless, I am cautiously looking forward to its release!

Honestly, I've owned the Nodachi and Masamune before and at the same time to mix the parts as was suggested to try different configurations. I was not impressed enough to keep them. More story than substance for me....

The tatararazors folk are genuine Nipponophiles and that interest influences their designs, which clearly have a look and feel that is very unique and Japanese. But, to your point, their strength goes beyond look and feel. The Tatara designs are the most sound razors, taken as a line, from a mechanical engineering perspective that I have encountered in the industry. Further, their application of engineering principles to offer unique solutions is industry leading. I can easily start rattling off examples of what suggested but a history of applying unique engineering solutions to address incumbent design weaknesses doesn't resolve your frustration with the tease launch approach being taken. While not a fan of tease reveals, it is at the heart of Japanese marketing from my experience.

Further, it is most interesting that you cite Shane Blackland Razors. To my mind, Shane is the only other razor artisan having a track record of engineering excellence and innovation to rival Tatara.

That is the strength of these two artisans, nearly all other artisans focus on execution of classic designs, which also has merit but Tatara and BlackLand are unique.

Finally, I have encouraged Tatara to consider a more efficient razor utilising aggressive geometry, for the US market if nowhere else...thus far, to no avail....

That will be awesome... I atleast am unaware of an adjustable AC format razor, of course we have the injector format adjustables.

That said any particular pointers which are giving that sense to you
