Hey fellas, I’m currently living in Germany and today I went to a huge flea market. I saw probably over 100 straight razors. Problem is, I have no clue what I’m looking at. Are there desirable brand name straights to look out for in Germany? Last thing I want to do is drop a bunch of $$$ on duds.
Bismarck (Dovo) is less than $120 in US: https://www.knifecenter.com/item/DV26820...nted-Blade
It is made in Germany and pretty good razor.
I like Ali's blade (France). I just ordered:

The main thing is look at the condition of the blade and scales, especially around the pivot. Most vintage razors from Germany (Solingen), France (Thiers), or England (Sheffield) will be made of good steel. If the blade is pitted with rust, you might not be able to get a decent shaving edge on the blade. If the blade is in good condition, but the scales are deteriorating, you can always replace the scales.
Check to make sure there is not excessive wear on the spine and that the wear is uniform side to side. Also make sure the blade does not have excessive warping. It is not unusual for a handcrafted blade to have some warping, but it can be a challenge to hone a blade if there is excessive warping.
