I typically had good shaves over the years. Started doing a 3rd pass ATG on the neck for that BBS feel over a year ago. A couple weeks ago I was trying to get BBS on one area of the neck and over did it. Gave me ingrown hairs. I grew out for a week and used unrefined shea butter to get through it. Started shaving again about a week ago, daily, but now only do two passes - WTG and XTG. My face feels better than ever. Soaps I had questioned are now A+++ soaps. Everything is just great now. DFS shaves are damn fine for me.  Smile

I don't really go for BBS anymore, too much hassle and pain.. lol.

Sometimes I get lucky and I get to do it effortless but most of the time, my experience is like yours. Chasing it and chasing it and my face suffers. I shave daily anyway, I'm sure DFS is perfectly acceptable.

The feel of a BBS shave is awesome, no doubt about it, but it's a unicorn for my sensitive skin.

My routine is WTG, XTG, XTG opposite direction.

With the neck, three passes WTG when I'm feeling a little defensive. WTG, ATG, ATG when I'm more confident.

What razor were you using btw?

ATT SE1, Maggard Slant, and Wolfman SB standard gap. Using all three this past week and I am very pleased with all three.

Great, looks like you found your sweet spot. I don't know about the performance of ATT SE and Maggard's slant but they seem to be on the aggressive spectrum of razors, so is the Wolfman SB at least to my skin. I think that's your pattern right there. More aggressive and efficient razors going WTG.

Good post, gregcss — I guess it just resonated with me. I’m quite happy with DFS, which means not going against the grain. Anything more than two passes (plus light touching up) for me is a recipe for failure. It’s usually just not worth it.

Glad to hear that you made a helpful discovery. Damn fine shaves can be fine shaves indeed!

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”

I wish I could settle for DFS and stop pushing it myself. I have this one area west to east on the right side of my jaw that can get irritated on occasion shaving ATG, and I just refuse to stop doing it. Glad that you are accepting a DFS! I need to suck it up and do the same.

It's taken me a couple of months to reach that same realization. I can usually get a BBS on my face, but NEVER on my neck. Trying to be a perfectionist landed me with an ugly, inflamed neck. Then I realized something. I am a married father of three. How many people are really going to be feeling up my neck on any given day? I now go WTG, XTG, XTG and end up with a shave that looks good and a neck that is irritation free. If I get my hands on my neck after a shave it still niggles me a bit, but hey, pride goeth before the fall...

I also only do 2 passes on my neck..1st pass is a hybrid of WTG/XTG and the 2nd is XTG.

Used to do 3 passes until about 2 months ago. For years (I mean lots-a-years) the BBS was a must. Now 1 WTH and 1 Against the grain will do. Sometimes a BBS, sometimes not. Muhle 89 and a Derby. Proraso Sensitive and the Omega 049. Always. I don't work for the BBS anymore. Just wanna look and smell good. Finding the finish-up part, aftershaves and colognes, take precedence over the "must have" BBS. Enjoying the forum and the great contributions everyone posts. Hey, Semper-fi Mike
