splash or balms for ingrown hairs

on my trip to walmart tonight, I'm picking up some ingredients I don't have at home to make my own tend skin.  I made some years back, but it smells very vinegary, so I tossed it a day or two ago.

I think that's the recipe I use. If it has glycerine, I don't add it. I've had better luck without it. I've been making mine with Humphries Lilac witch Hazel and it has toned down the scent you get from the aspirin.

why don't you like the glycerine? the only item I have a hard time finding is the uncoated aspirin. I have some that expired in the middle of 2014. from what I've read, most medicines, including aspirin, are still at their full strength well after their listed expiration date.

it's been a while since I used tend skin. do you apply yours, let it sit for a few minutes and then wash it off?

Balms aren't problematic as long as you exfoliate every now and again, which the razor naturally does. Actually, splashes can offer a lot more trouble since the alcohol can dry the skin, lead to flakes, and clog pores. It depends on your skin type really.

I'd suggest a heavier alcohol-free balm like Antica Barbieria Colla Apricot Hull, or an alcohol-free aftershave gel like Penhaligon's Bayolea (I think is the one?).

both of those aftershaves are way too expensive for my taste.

any thoughts on chattilon lux's post-shave toners?

But whether or not you go with one of these, I'm sure you can find inexpensive options that are alcohol free. The ones I suggested are simply a couple of my favorites.

nice call on gifts & care with the myrsol emulsion...comes to $16.64 ($2.64/oz) after the DFS discount is applied. not bad!

I put it on, let it dry for a few minutes, then apply my aftershave balm or my moisturizer.

thanks. I started using my DIY tend skin last night after my shave. I applied some this afternoon before heading into work.

I was a bit surprised that the alcohol didn't cause a burning sensation on my neck...

My favorite is the Penhaligon's with a few drops of M-bomb (menthol) or I just use some Osage rub before the Pen's

I've also considered seeing my dermatologist about my issues to see if there was something stronger that can help tame the ingrown beasts while my technique improves.

It takes me a good 5 to 10 days to really know if something is having any effect. Dermatologist's are good for ideas, but I've found their suggestions to be trial and error too. Don't just follow their advice and assume their advice was 100% right. Treat it as experiments and decide yourself whether it really helps or not.
