Razor: Blackland Era (Level 5)

Pre: P.A.A. Cube 2.0 w/ Cube Dock
Lather: Van Yulay Oh Baby!
Brush: The Wet Shaving Store Faux Horn (26mm)
Bowl: Fine Accoutrements Fine Lather Bowl

Post 1: P.A.A. Alum w/ No-Slip Grip System & Dry Dock System
Aftershave: Van Yulay Oh Baby!

I really had a nice shave today with the setup I used. It's been a while since I've used my Era and today's shave reminded me that I've been missing out.

Oh, man! Or should I say "Oh Baby!"? This shaving soap is really good! This particular one is Van Yulay's tallow base and has some great ingredients like emo oil, babassu oil, silk amino acids, and bentonite clay. All of these add up to a shaving soap that's very slick and has a great post-shave feel. No joke.

If that wasn't enough, it smells great too! It has notes of tobacco, Italian bergamot, apple, pineapple, rose, oud, birch, Moroccan jasmine, patchouli, musk, oakmoss, ambergris, and vanilla. Wow right? I'm hoping you can piece this all together and get an idea of what this one smells like. Even if you can't just know that it's a complex scent that fits into the "really nice cologne type" category. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect when I chose this one but am thoroughly pleased not that I have it in front of me.

I whipped up a nice big bowl of lather, which is easy to do with this soap. The Wet Shaving Store synthetic brush deserves a lot of credit as well. Do not discount this brush. It has backbone, splays when needed, and has nice soft tips. It's also economical and worthy of your consideration. I've never had an issue building lather with this brush.

Once my face was painted I dove in with my Era. At level 5 with a safety bar and a Nacet blade, it just wiped my face clean of any hair making shaving an easy task. I did three passes and had a bbs for sure.

Once done I applied some Oh Baby! aftershave and was again impressed with the feel. It too has several beneficial oils and other restorative ingredients. The fragrance is also stronger, which is expected but very much appreciated.

Alright, my friends. Thanks for reading and enjoy your shaves.

Consecutive Daily Shaves - # 1,730

So I stink at searches and don't know exactly how many shaves I've had with this soap, but I know I've used this soap a TON. A TON I tell you and it has barely decreased in amount IF it has at all. LOVE the Soap base and LOVE the scent. The one thing that was frustrating was the aftershave left me feel like I had a film instead of my skin feeling clean. Only way I can describe it. So I experimented with different aftershaves to use with the soap and found some that work well and still leave the "Kentucky Rain" scent coming thru. I would keep trying to go back to the Matching Splash but still just didn't like the feeling of it after use. This is NOT a knock on the product as you can't please everyone with all the variances in skin types. That's why I NEVER said anything about it and chalked it up to my loss. I even added a touch of scentless Witch Hazel hoping to cut it some but still no love. Today I took my SOTD pic with my favorite aftershave match with this Soap which was Small Batch Shave Tonic but as I showered after some early yardwork to beat the heat, I decided that I was going to try one last thing I read after some Googling. Someone was talking about a different aftershave and different maker that left him feeling as I described. 1 recommendation was to put some water in your palm and then add some of the aftershave to it. Rub in hands to mix and then apply to the face. THAT was the ticket for me to be able to use it HAPPILY. It still isn't perfect for me like some of my favorite aftershaves but it's good enough that I can now use and enjoy the matching splash with the soap. I REPEAT that the issue is NOT the product but MY skin makeup and that's why I never said anything as I didn't want to discourage people from buying this SET. dominicr This scent is KILLER and addictive for me !! Thanks for a product that will ALWAYS be in my den and probably the original ever self-producing soap will outlive me! Have a great day everyone !

Thank you for the compliments. A few things...first with regards to the aftershave. One other thing you want to try is using LESS of the product. It is almost more like a serum than a typical liquid splash. We use an ingredient that is called Glycereth which is like glycerin on steroids. It is a superior humectant and really gives the skin a silky feeling. Next, it looks like you BARELY touched that soap's surface. Do you know how many shaves in you are?
And last but not least, we are proud of that scent. It took 2 years of work on a "bourbon" scent. It wasn't quite "there" so, late in the game we introduced rose into the game. We think it's KILLER too!
Thanks a bunch.

dominicr I had to go back to Dec 24th of 2022 in my Journal to when it was released. I would have thought I used it more but if I didn't miss any in the 50 plus pages in my Journal I had to go thru, I counted 11 uses and it looks the same as the day I got it, still full to the lip as seen in today's photo. 11 times in 7 months is quite a bit of use considering I have between 60-70 soaps on hand and have had dozens that have gone thru the den in those 7 months so that speaks for how often I grab this scent (ignoring others) and no doubt will more now.

Dave I picked the set after seeing in one of your videos and is one of my favorite. This is one long lasting, performing and fantastic smelling soap and slash. I actually quite like the splash and prefer to many other lighter ones that require I use a balm afterwards.

I'm glad you're enjoying the scent as much as me and very glad the splash works for you. As I said I realize that we all have different skin needs and non-needs. You can't make one that fits everybody which I completely understand. Have a great evening !
